Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Six months later.
The summer evening was warm and gentle over the coastal hills of Malibu.
I stood on the oceanfront deck of my new home—a modest, beautiful architectural house built of glass and wood, sitting high above the crashing waves. I had sold the grand estate where Victoria had hidden her father's crimes, donating thirty percent of the proceeds to a foundation supporting victims of domestic abuse and corporate exploitation.
Behind me, the sliding glass doors opened.
Mia walked out onto the deck, wearing a simple white linen dress, carrying two glasses of sparkling water. She walked over to the wooden railing, standing beside me as the sun began its slow descent into the golden horizon.
"It's peaceful here," she murmured, watching the seabirds glide across the water.
"It is," I agreed, taking one of the glasses from her hand. "No hidden cameras. No secret steel boxes. Just the truth."
Over the past nine months, our professional relationship had evolved into a deep, genuine friendship built on absolute trust, mutual respect, and shared healing. We had both survived the darkest night of our lives, coming out on the other side stronger, wiser, and completely free.
"Prosecutor Reed called this afternoon," Mia mentioned softly. "The plea bargains for Richard Sterling and Arthur were officially rejected by the judge. The trial starts next month."
"Good," I said quietly. "They will spend the rest of their lives behind bars where they belong."
Mia turned to look at me, her dark eyes reflecting the warm orange light of the sunset. "Do you ever regret it, Daniel? Coming home early that day?"
I looked at her, then out at the vast, endless ocean stretching out before us.
"Not for a single second," I answered truthfully. "If I hadn't opened that door, I would still be living a lie, married to a ghost, waiting for my own destruction. Coming home early was the best mistake of my life."

Mia smiled—a radiant, beautiful expression of complete peace.
We stood together on the deck, watching the last rays of sunlight dip beneath the horizon, welcoming the bright, unwritten dawn of our new lives.
