Chapter 8 - The Corporate Floor

At eight-forty-five the following morning, the marble lobby of Vale Global’s headquarters on Wall Street was buzzing with activity. Executives in dark suits, administrative assistants carrying coffee, and security guards stood at their posts as the glass turnstiles clicked steadily.
At eight-fifty, Vanessa Crowne stepped through the main revolving doors, wearing a sharp white ivory suit, gold jewelry, and carrying a leather portfolio containing the signed proxy documents. Beside her was her mother, Celeste, wearing a matching mink coat.
Two security guards at the desk bowed their heads politely as she passed.
"Good morning, Miss Crowne," the desk officer said. "Head office?"
"Yes, the corporate registrar on the forty-second floor," Vanessa said, stepping toward the private executive elevator.
She pressed the button for the forty-second floor. The elevator ascended smoothly, silent and swift, until the brass doors chimed open into the grand marble hallway of the executive suite.
Waiting for her in the center of the hallway was not the corporate registrar.
Standing there, flanked by eight senior members of the board of directors and twelve armed federal agents wearing blue jackets with FBI stamped in gold across the back, was Silas Vale.
He was wearing his dark navy suit, leaning on his eagle-headed cane. His bandaged hand was gone, replaced by a dark leather glove.
Beside Silas stood Adrian.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. Celeste gasped, her hand flying to her throat.
"Adrian?" Vanessa stammered, taking a step toward her fiancé. "What... what is this? Why are the police here?"
Adrian didn't move. He stood next to his father, his face completely devoid of the warmth, love, and softness that Vanessa had manipulated for fourteen months. His eyes were cold, dark, and filled with a profound, terrifying disappointment.
"Hello, Vanessa," Adrian said, his voice flat as granite.
"Adrian, darling, what’s going on?" Vanessa tried again, holding up the leather portfolio. "I came to drop off the trust documents—"
"The documents you had me sign with invisible, light-sensitive security ink?" Adrian asked softly.
Vanessa’s heart stopped.
Silas took two steps forward, his cane clicking against the marble floor.
"Did you really think my son was stupid, Vanessa?" Silas asked gently. "Did you really think a boy who grew up watching me run an international conglomerate wouldn't recognize a corporate hostile takeover play when it was dropped on his desk?"
Vanessa looked at Adrian, panic wildly fluttering in her chest. "Adrian... what is he talking about? I love you!"
"You love twenty percent of Vale Global," Adrian said, stepping forward. He pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a button.
A high-definition audio recording played loudly through the executive suite’s speaker system:
“I’m delivering the papers to the registrar at nine AM sharp... Tell the wedding planners to upgrade the flowers to orchids. The Vales are paying for everything.”
“It's done! He signed the proxy! We control the voting block!”
Vanessa turned ash-white. "You... you bugged my room?"
"No," Silas corrected smoothly. "We bugged the pen Adrian gave you to sign those papers. Every word you said to your mother for the last twelve hours was recorded on a secure federal server."
"This is crazy!" Celeste shrieked, backing toward the elevator doors. "This is harassment! We are calling our lawyers!"
"Your lawyers are already busy, Celeste," Silas said coldly. "They’re currently being served with seventeen federal warrants for wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering in the Cayman Islands."
He stepped aside and gestured toward the double oak doors of the main boardroom behind him.
"And there’s one more person who wants to see you," Silas added.
The heavy boardroom doors opened slowly.
A man walked out, leaning on a wooden cane, dressed in a sharp gray suit.
Vanessa stared at the man’s face. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Celeste let out a strangled, terrified shriek and collapsed backward against the elevator wall.
"Hello, Celeste," Richard Crowne said, his voice shaking with ten years of suppressed agony. "Hello, Vanessa. You look wonderful... for a daughter whose father died ten years ago in Colombia."
