Chapter 6 - THE PUBLIC WAR

Twenty-four hours later.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in the center of the city was filled with television cameras, reporters, and legal journalists.

Over seventy major news outlets were present, drawn by an urgent press release sent out early that morning by my father's legal team: Rachel Morgan-Vale to Expose Multi-Million-Dollar Corporate Forgery and Human Rights Violations Involving Vale Enterprises.

At the head table sat three women.

I sat in the center, dressed in a sharp black business suit, my hair drawn back neatly. To my left sat Laura Higgins, accompanied by an independent legal advocate provided by my father. To my right sat my attorney, Marcus Vance—who, ironically, was the cousin of Eleanor's crooked lawyer Ms. Vance, but held an ironclad reputation for ethical corporate litigation.

On a soft cushion in a bassinet behind the table, guarded by two private security personnel hired by my father, slept tiny Hope.

The camera flashes were blinding, a continuous wall of white light reflecting off the crystal chandeliers of the ballroom.

Marcus Vance stepped up to the podium microphone.

"Thank you all for coming," Marcus's voice echoed through the high-powered sound system. "Today, my client, Rachel Morgan-Vale, along with Ms. Laura Higgins, will present incontrovertible forensic evidence demonstrating a massive, coordinated conspiracy involving Vale Enterprises, Apex Reproductive Solutions, and forged legal documents designed to manipulate corporate probate shareholdings worth over eighty million dollars."

The room erupted into a frenzy of raised hands and shouting reporters.

"Mrs. Vale!" a senior reporter from the Daily Chronicle yelled over the noise. "Your husband, Ethan Vale, issued a statement two hours ago claiming you suffered a severe postpartum psychotic break and abducted a child from the hospital! How do you respond?!"

I stepped up to the second microphone, leaning forward, my eyes locking directly into the primary lens of the national news broadcast camera.

"Ethan Vale lied," I said, my voice cutting through the room with absolute, terrifying clarity. "And today, I brought the receipts."

The room went completely silent.

Behind us, a massive digital projector screen lit up.

"What you are seeing on this screen," I explained, pointing to high-resolution forensic document analysis, "is a handwriting verification report conducted by three independent court-certified forensic experts. It proves that the signatures appearing on the surrogacy authorization forms, the hospital consent documents, and the expedited custody affidavits bearing my name were all forged by Eleanor Vale's executive secretary, Sandra Miller."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

"Furthermore," I continued, switching the screen to display a series of encrypted wire transfers, "we have documented evidence that Vale Enterprises utilized offshore shell accounts to bypass state surrogacy laws, exploiting a vulnerable young woman—Ms. Laura Higgins—by withholding promised medical funding for her terminally ill brother unless she complied with their illegal secrecy protocols."

Laura Higgins stepped up to the microphone, her voice trembling slightly, but holding firm.

"I carried this baby believing I was helping a grieving, loving couple," Laura said, tears shining in her eyes as she looked at the cameras. "Instead, I was used as an incubator by Eleanor Vale to secure corporate shares. They lied to me. They lied to Rachel. And when we confronted them, they threatened to ruin our lives."

The reporters were typing furiously on their laptops, several network producers already broadcasting live across national television channels.

"Mrs. Vale!" another reporter shouted. "What is the status of the baby right now? Who has legal custody?!"

"Under current state emergency protection laws," my attorney Marcus answered, "Rachel Morgan-Vale remains the legal mother of record on the filed birth certificate. We have filed an immediate injunction in State Supreme Court preventing Ethan Vale or Eleanor Vale from approaching within five hundred feet of Rachel, Laura, or Baby Hope."

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the Plaza Hotel ballroom burst open.

Ethan Vale stood in the doorway, flanked by four high-priced corporate attorneys in dark suits. He looked disheveled, his eyes wild, his tie undone, looking like a man who was watching his entire world implode in real time.

"Rachel!" Ethan roared across the ballroom, attempting to push past the hotel security guards. "Rachel, stop this! Shut these cameras off!"

The entire media corps turned their cameras simultaneously toward Ethan Vale, capturing his frantic, desperate breakdown on live national television.

I looked across the long room, meeting the eyes of the man I had loved for three years—the man who had watched me cry over dead embryos while hiding a monster's secret in his heart.

I didn't flinch. I didn't cry.

I raised my head high, looked straight into his eyes, and spoke into the microphone:

"It's over, Ethan. The truth is out. And you are never, ever going to hurt us again."
