Chapter 7 - The Sterling Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with three hundred of Chicago’s most powerful figures. Politicians, judges, corporate CEOs, and socialites moved beneath crystal chandeliers, sipping vintage champagne and listening to a twenty-piece orchestra.

At the head of the main staircase stood Chloe Sterling.

She wore a strapless silver sequins gown, her blonde hair styled into a high, rigid updraft. She was holding a crystal glass, surrounded by a court of laughing admirers, reveling in the spotlight.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the master of ceremonies announced over the sound system, “tonight we celebrate the philanthropic vision of the Sterling Heritage Foundation, and its new chair, Miss Chloe Sterling!”

The crowd erupted into applause. Chloe stepped up to the microphone, her face radiant with artificial joy.

“Thank you, everyone,” Chloe said, her voice smooth and practiced. “My father always believed that family legacy is built on integrity, honor, and service to this great city—”

The double oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a heavy, echoing crash.

The music sputtered to a halt.

The crowd turned as one, a collective gasp echoing through the vast ballroom.

Walking down the center aisle, framed by six broad-shouldered men in dark suits, was Adrian Moretti.

And beside him, her hand resting gracefully on his arm, her emerald velvet dress sweeping over the marble floor, was me.

Chloe’s voice died in her throat. The microphone caught her sharp, terrified intake of air, amplifying it across the entire ballroom.

Her face drained of all color until she looked like a ghost under the stage lights.

“Amelia?” Chloe stammered into the live microphone.

I didn't stop walking until we reached the foot of the grand staircase.

The entire room was dead silent. People nudged each other, pulling up their phones, instantly recognizing the woman from the viral video that had taken over the news six hours earlier.

“Good evening, Chloe,” I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent hall without the aid of a microphone. “You omitted a name from your speech about family legacy.”

Chloe clutched her champagne glass so tightly the crystal cracked. “You... you don't belong here. Security! Remove her!”

Not a single security guard moved.

Standing at the edge of the room, the hotel’s head of security simply bowed his head to Adrian Moretti and stepped back against the wall.

Adrian took a step up the stairs, his dark presence casting a long shadow over Chloe.

“Miss Sterling,” Adrian said smoothly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “I believe you are familiar with my legal team. They filed three emergency motions with the Federal District Court two hours ago.”

Two process servers in gray suits stepped out from behind Adrian, walking up the stairs and handing Chloe a thick stack of legal summonses.

“What is this?” Chloe shrieked, backing away from the papers as if they were poisonous snakes.

“That is a freeze order on every account associated with the Sterling Foundation,” I said, taking two steps up the stairs toward her, holding my head high. “That is a criminal indictment for forgery, wire fraud, and grand larceny. And that is an eviction notice for the Lake Forest estate.”

The ballroom erupted into loud, frantic whispers. Phones flashed continuously as guests filmed every second of Chloe’s humiliation.

“You’re lying!” Chloe screamed, dropping her champagne glass, letting it shatter against the marble steps. “She’s a crazy florist! She’s mentally unstable! Look at her! She assaulted a store manager on Michigan Avenue!”

“Vanessa Clark confessed two hours ago, Chloe,” Adrian said coldly, taking the final step up the stairs, standing directly over her. “She gave a full, taped statement to the State’s Attorney detailing every dollar you paid her to ruin Amelia’s life.”

Chloe looked around the room, desperately seeking help from her socialite friends, the judges, the politicians she had catered to for years.

Every single one of them turned their backs on her, taking steps away from the stage, abandoning her like a sinking ship.

Four uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit entered the back of the ballroom, led by Officer Ramirez.

“Chloe Sterling,” Officer Ramirez announced loudly, walking down the center aisle. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand theft, and conspiracy.”

Chloe fell to her knees on the marble steps, weeping uncontrollably as the silver handcuffs clicked over her wrists, her silver gown tearing against the sharp edge of the stairs.

As they led her past me, she looked up, her face ruined by running mascara and terror.

“Amelia... please...” Chloe sobbed. “We’re sisters...”

I looked down at her with cold, steady eyes.

“Sisters don't steal lives, Chloe,” I said quietly. “They protect them.”
