Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT OF ICE

The heavy front doors of the mansion were kicked open with a thunderous CRASH.
"POLICE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"
Detective Rodriguez and a squad of six heavily armed tactical officers burst into the foyer, their rifles raised, their boots stomping up the grand staircase.
They flooded into Claire’s bedroom, their weapons pointing at my parents.
"Margaret Wells! Thomas Wells! You are under arrest for second-degree murder and child exploitation!" Rodriguez yelled, pulling out her handcuffs.
My father raised his hands immediately, weeping hysterically, collapsing onto his knees in surrender. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot! It was all her! It was Margaret’s idea!"
My mother didn't move. She remained on her knees beside the bed, cradling Claire’s cold, lifeless head in her lap, rocking back and forth, chanting softly to herself like a woman who had lost her mind.
"She’s sleeping... my baby is just sleeping..." my mother muttered, her eyes completely unfocused.
Detective Rodriguez stepped into the room, her eyes sweeping over the tragic scene. She looked at Claire’s body, then looked at my mother, and finally... her eyes fell upon me.
I stood near the window, bathed in the pale moonlight, wearing my hospital gown, breathing clearly, my skin warm and alive.
Detective Rodriguez froze, dropping her flashlight onto the carpet. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out for five long seconds.
"E-Emily...?" Rodriguez whispered, her voice trembling in absolute disbelief. "How... how are you standing there? We saw your body in the morgue..."
I looked at the detective, offering a soft, gentle smile—the first real smile of my life.
"The girl in the morgue was just a shell, Detective," I said softly. "The truth brought me back."
The tactical officers stared at me in horror and confusion, lowering their weapons slightly, unable to comprehend what their eyes were seeing.
I turned away from them, looking out the large glass window at the rain fading into the early morning light.

My mother was cuffed and dragged down the stairs, screaming Claire’s name until her voice was completely raw. My father was led out in chains, sobbing like a coward, begging for mercy from anyone who would listen.
The house—the golden cage where I had been bled for eighteen years—was finally empty.
