Chapter 5 - The Morning Storm

At 6:00 AM, the rising sun cast long, amber rays across the floor of my private hospital room.
On the wall-mounted television screen, the news anchor for Good Morning America stood in front of a giant digital backdrop featuring the Ashford Estate.
BREAKING NEWS: LOGISTICS TYCOON ARRESTED AFTER VIOLENT ASSAULT AT BABY SHOWER; ASHFORD GLOBAL IN FINANCIAL FREEFALL
The screen cut directly to the crystal-clear, high-definition video feed captured by my hidden ceiling cameras.
The country watched in stunned horror as Grant Ashford walked into the ballroom with Kelsey on his arm. They heard his cold, vicious sneer: “She’s pregnant with the real heir, you infertile piece of trash.” They saw him drive his fist violently into my eight-month-pregnant stomach. They heard the loud crash of the glass table, saw me lying bleeding on the floor, and watched Evelyn Ashford clap her hands in applause.
The audio was so sharp that every whisper, every insult, and every sound of shattering glass echoed through millions of living rooms across America.
"My God," the female news anchor gasped live on air, her voice trembling with genuine disgust. "We must warn our viewers that the footage you are seeing is extremely graphic. Grant Ashford, CEO of Ashford Global, remains in police custody facing felony assault charges, while his newborn daughter was delivered via emergency surgery late last night."
The screen cut to a financial analyst standing outside the New York Stock Exchange.
"Ashford Global stock has been halted from trading after dropping sixty-four percent in pre-market activity," the analyst reported. "Following the immediate cancellation of their primary software operating system by Vanguard Systems, market analysts predict Ashford Global will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy before the closing bell today."
I sat up in my hospital bed, cradling Clara against my chest, nursing her quietly while my father and brothers watched the broadcast.
My phone, which had been set to silent on the bedside table, began vibrating continuously.
Over two hundred text messages and forty missed calls flooded the screen.
Socialites who had ignored me at galas, women who had whispered behind my back, former friends who had taken Evelyn’s side—all of them were suddenly sending desperate messages of support, apology, and outrage on my behalf.
I ignored every single one of them.
At 8:30 AM, a gentle knock sounded at my door.
Captain Miller stepped into the room, holding his police hat under his arm.
"Mrs. Vance," Captain Miller said respectfully. "I thought you should know that Arthur Ashford just arrived at the station with a team of four defense attorneys. They managed to post Grant’s three-million-dollar bail using a real estate bond against their Newport mansion."
I didn't flinch. "Is Grant out?"
"He was processed out fifteen minutes ago," Captain Miller confirmed. "However, as he walked out the front steps of the precinct, two special agents from the FBI's Financial Crimes Division arrested him on a seven-count federal indictment for corporate wire fraud and insider trading."
Captain Miller chuckled softly, shaking his head.
"They handcuffed him right on the courthouse steps in front of thirty news cameras. The magistrate set no bail on the federal charges. He’s being transferred to the Federal Detention Center in Rhode Island as we speak."
"What about his mother?" Ethan asked from his chair.
"Evelyn Ashford was served with a grand jury subpoena for accessory to assault and corporate misprision ten minutes ago," Captain Miller added. "Her legal team is currently trying to prevent her personal bank accounts from being frozen by the Attorney General's office."
"Thank you, Captain," my father said, standing up to shake Captain Miller’s hand. "We appreciate the update."
After Captain Miller left, Nathan closed his laptop and stood up, smoothing his tie.
"It's time for step two, Nora," Nathan said, looking at me with a sharp, professional focus. "The board of directors at Ashford Global has called an emergency shareholder meeting for 11:00 AM at their corporate headquarters downtown. They are desperate to find a way to save the company from complete liquidation."
"Are we going?" I asked, looking down at Clara’s tiny, sleeping face.
Nathan pulled a sleek black leather folder from his briefcase, holding up a stock proxy certificate.
"For seven years, Grant thought you were living off his salary," Nathan said, his eyes gleaming with quiet triumph. "He didn't realize that every year for your birthday, Dad bought you non-voting preferred shares in Ashford Global through an anonymous offshore trust."
Nathan laid the document on my bed.
"As of 9:00 AM today, when the institutional hedge funds dumped their stock in panic, Julian executed our short options. You now own fifty-two percent of the voting shares in Ashford Global."

I looked at the document, feeling a slow, powerful surge of justice rising from deep within my soul.
"Get my clothes, Nathan," I said, handing Clara gently to my father. "I have a board meeting to attend."
