Chapter 5 - The Attorney’s Betrayal

A woman like Celeste Vaughn did not operate in a vacuum.

To infiltrate a four-billion-dollar family estate, bypass multi-layered background checks conducted by elite security agencies, and alter high-level legal trusts, she required inside assistance. She needed someone with access to our family's most sensitive legal and financial infrastructure.

At 8:00 AM on Sunday morning, I sat in the conference room of Ashford Global Headquarters on the forty-fifth floor of our downtown skyscraper.

Across the long glass table sat Arthur Pendelton—a senior partner at Pendelton, Croft & Vance, the prestigious law firm that had represented my family for thirty-five years.

Arthur was sixty-two years old, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his silver hair neatly slicked back. He had been a close friend of my father’s since their college days at Yale. He was also the man who had overseen the recent, rapid revisions to my father’s estate plan.

"Evelyn," Arthur said, pouring himself a cup of black coffee from the silver carafe, his voice rich, smooth, and comforting. "This whole situation with Celeste is absolutely horrifying. Your father called me at four in the morning. I couldn't believe my ears. To think that a predator like that almost infiltrated this family..."

I sat quietly, watching him take a sip of his coffee.

"It’s tragic, Arthur," I said smoothly, resting my hands flat on the glass table. "A total nightmare. But luckily, the police have her in custody. They're searching her temporary downtown apartment right now."

Arthur’s coffee cup froze midway to his saucer.

"Oh?" Arthur asked, his tone remaining polite, though his knuckles tightened around the porcelain handle. "Have they... have they found anything of significance?"

"Not yet," I replied, leaning back in my chair. "But my private security team searched her cloud storage account three hours ago."

Arthur set his cup down with a faint clink. "Evelyn, you know that unauthorized access to personal cloud data is legally inadmissible in court—"

"I don't care about court admissibility right now, Arthur," I interrupted softly. "I care about truth."

I pulled a sleek tablet from my leather briefcase and slid it across the glass table toward him.

On the screen was a bank transfer ledger from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, dated six weeks ago.

The sender was a shell company registered in Panama under the name Silverline Assets—an entity we had linked directly to Celeste Vaughn’s illegal operations in Florida.

The recipient was a private trust account in Switzerland.

The beneficiary of that Swiss trust was Arthur Pendelton.

The amount transferred: two point five million dollars.

Arthur stared at the tablet screen. The color slowly drained from his face, leaving his skin looking like wet paper.

"You verified her background check three months ago, Arthur," I said, my voice steady, cold, and relentless. "You personally vouched for her to my father. You told him she was from a respectable, wealthy Texas family with clean credentials. And in exchange for two point five million dollars, you drafted a revised estate contract that gave her forty percent of Ashford Global upon my father’s death."

"Evelyn... listen to me..." Arthur stammered, his smooth, polished courtroom demeanor crumbling into frantic panic. "You don't understand... I was in a difficult position..."

"What kind of difficult position, Arthur?" I asked, leaning forward over the table. "Gambling debts? Extortion? Or were you just greedy?"

"She had photos!" Arthur blurted out, his hands flying to his head, sweating profusely. "Two years ago in Zurich... she set a trap for me! She had photographs that would have ruined my marriage, my partnership at the firm, my entire life! She threatened to publish them if I didn't help her access your father’s estate!"

I stared at the man who had sat at our family Christmas dinner table for thirty years.

"So to save your own reputation," I whispered, "you handed my father to a murderer."

"I didn't know she was going to kill him!" Arthur wept, burying his face in his hands. "She told me she just wanted a divorce settlement! She told me she was going to stay married to him for two years, take a fifty-million-dollar buyout, and leave! I swear to God, Evelyn, I didn't know about the poison!"

I picked up my phone from the table and tapped the screen.

"Detective Miller," I said into the speakerphone. "You can come in now."

The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom opened. Detective Miller and two uniformed officers walked into the room, holding a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Arthur Pendelton," Detective Miller announced, stepping up to the lawyer. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, commercial bribery, and fraud."

Arthur didn't fight. He didn't speak. He allowed the officers to pull his arms behind his back and snap the cuffs around his wrists, weeping silently as they led him out of the executive suite.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the police cruiser arrive on the street forty-five stories below.

Phase two was complete. But the real mastermind behind Celeste’s arrival had not yet been exposed.

Because Celeste Vaughn hadn't chosen Jonathan Ashford by accident. She had been directed to him.
