Chapter 4 - The Web of Deceit

The truth hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating poison.

For seven years, I had built my career on an unshakeable belief in justice, integrity, and the law—values I naively believed my father had instilled in me. I had prosecuted corporate executives for cooking balance sheets and destroying lives, proud that my family's fortune was built on righteous innovation.

It was all a lie. The Ashford empire was built on the destroyed corpse of Marcus Kane.

I stood up from my chair, stepping back from my father as if he were a stranger. "You framed him," I said, my voice barely functional. "You let him take the blame for unsafe clinical trials? You put a drug on the market that was compromised?!"

"No! No, the drug was safe!" Jonathan pleaded, looking up with desperate eyes. "The research was sound, Evelyn! But the trial data had administrative discrepancies that would have delayed our FDA approval by three years! Three years would have bankrupted us! I altered the validation records to bypass the regulatory delay. Marcus discovered the alterations right before the IPO. He was going to stop the launch. He was going to destroy forty years of work!"

"So you destroyed him instead," I said, cold fury radiating through my chest.

"I didn't know he would kill himself!" Jonathan wept. "I thought he would take a settlement and rebuild! I swear to God, Evelyn, I never wanted him to die! When Clara—when Celeste—appeared in my life last year, I saw her rage. I saw what I had stolen from her. I thought... I thought if I gave her the estate, if I altered my will to transfer forty percent of Ashford Holdings to her, I could make amends. I could clear my conscience."

"You weren't clearing your conscience, Dad," I said, my tone turning to absolute ice. "You were inviting your own executioner into our home because you were too cowardly to face a courtroom."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the door.

"Evelyn, please!" he called out, his voice cracking. "Where are you going?!"

"To do what you should have done seven years ago," I said without looking back. "To find the truth."

I left the manor and drove directly to the Manhattan headquarters of Ashford Pharmaceuticals. The massive sixty-story glass tower on Madison Avenue was in chaos. Media camera crews were lined up outside the revolving doors. Employees were whispering in clusters in the marble lobby.

I bypassed security using my executive keycard and took the private elevator straight to the 50th floor—the legal archives and corporate records department.

If my father had framed Marcus Kane in 2018, there had to be a trail. My father was a brilliant strategist, but no corporate crime is entirely seamless. There are always back-up servers, suppressed audit logs, and silent accomplices.

I locked myself in the master archive room, pulling up the encrypted 2018 clinical trial files for CordiGuard—the flagship drug that made the company billions.

For six grueling hours, I combed through thousands of pages of raw data, chemical logs, and third-party laboratory audits. My legal training kicked into high gear. I cross-referenced the internal communication stamps with the external server logs.

At 3:14 PM, I found it.

It wasn't a hidden file. It was a deleted partition log that had been overwritten three times, but the metadata remained intact on the cold-storage backup drives.

My heart stopped as I read the terminal code.

The user ID that authorized the falsification of the 2018 clinical trial data and wiped the server logs was not my father's.

It wasn't Marcus Kane's, either.

The authorization key belonged to Vanguard Legal Consultants—the external corporate compliance firm hired by the Ashford Board of Directors in 2017.

And the managing partner of Vanguard Legal Consultants in 2018 was a man named Richard Vaughn.

Celeste’s uncle.

I stared at the glowing blue screen, the realization dawning on me with terrifying clarity.

My father believed he had framed Marcus Kane. He had spent seven years drowning in guilt, believing his own hands were stained with his partner's blood. But he hadn't orchestrated the fraud. He had been manipulated into believing he was responsible by the very legal team he had hired to protect him.

Richard Vaughn and his niece had staged the entire 2018 fraud scheme to ruin both Marcus Kane and Jonathan Ashford, intending to swallow the company whole through corporate bankruptcy restructuring. When my father unexpectedly survived the legal fallout and maintained control of the company, they changed their strategy.

They sent Clara—Celeste—to execute Phase Two: infiltrate his life, feed his guilt, get him to sign over his estate, and then eliminate him before he could discover the truth.

Celeste wasn't acting out of righteous revenge for her father.

She was executing a long-range corporate heist seven years in the making.

My phone rang. The screen displayed an unknown, encrypted number.

I answered it. "Evelyn Ashford."

"You're very sharp, Evelyn," a smooth, cultured male voice spoke through the speaker. "Just like your mother was."

"Richard Vaughn," I said, leaning over the desk, my knuckles turning white.

"You've been digging through the 2018 archives," Richard said, his tone shockingly relaxed. "A brilliant display of legal acumen. But unfortunately for you, you're looking at an old board game. The pieces have already moved."

"Celeste is in police custody," I countered coldly. "We have the poison. We have the video. You're finished."

Richard chuckled gently—a dry, chilling sound.

"My dear girl," Richard said softly. "Do you really think Clara was operating without a safety net? Check your father's personal foundation accounts right now. Then check the primary holding shares of Ashford Pharmaceuticals."

I quickly opened a second window on my laptop, typing in the administrative bypass credentials for the foundation.

My blood ran cold.

Ten minutes ago, an automated power-of-attorney execution had been triggered. Using a digitized biometric consent form signed by my father three days ago—likely while under the influence of Celeste's sedatives—fifty-one percent of the voting shares of Ashford Pharmaceuticals had been legally transferred to an offshore corporate entity: Vanguard Global Asset Management.

"Your father surrendered the empire forty-eight hours ago, Evelyn," Richard whispered into the line. "And by 5:00 PM today, the board will assemble to officially announce his removal as Chairman. Welcome to the end of the Ashford family."
