Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Peace

Six months later.
Autumn has returned to Chicago, painting the trees along Lake Michigan in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep crimson.
I stand on the wide stone balcony of the Vance estate’s east wing, holding a cup of hot black coffee in my hand, looking out over the manicured lawns and the sparkling waters of the harbor in the distance.
Inside the bedroom behind me, soft classical music plays from the stereo.
My mother, Sylvia Vance, sits comfortably in a motorized wheelchair near the bay window, wrapped in a cashmere shawl. Though her recovery has been slow, the removal of the neurotoxin capsules and the introduction of genuine, restorative physical therapy have worked wonders. She can now speak in soft, clear sentences, and her hands are strong enough to hold a book and turn its pages independently.
The glass door slides open, and Marta steps out onto the balcony, carrying a fresh plate of sliced apples and honey for my mother.
“Mr. Vance,” Marta says with a warm, cheerful smile. “Your mother wants to know if you are joining us for lunch today, or if you have another meeting at the docks.”
I turn around, smiling back at the woman who saved our family from destruction.
“Tell her I have cleared my entire afternoon, Marta,” I reply smoothly. “No meetings, no business syndicates, no travels. Just family.”
Marta nods happily and steps back inside to attend to my mother.
I take one last sip of my coffee, looking out over the vast, secure perimeter of the estate. The gates are strong, the guards are loyal, and the shadows that once threatened to tear my world apart have been thoroughly swept away by the uncompromising light of truth.
I walk back inside the warm, sunlit room, pull up a chair beside my mother, and reach out to take her hand.
She looks at me, her eyes bright and clear, squeezing my fingers with a gentle, enduring warmth.

“Welcome home, Victor,” she whispers softly with a genuine smile.
“I’m right here, Mother,” I reply, looking into her eyes with total, unbreakable peace. “And I’m never leaving.”
