Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Empire

Over the next four weeks, the true scope of Todd’s multi-year criminal enterprise was systematically dismantled by federal investigators, forensic accountants, and Dana Price’s legal team.
It turned out that Todd’s abuse of Maya was only one arm of a sprawling, desperate web of corruption.
For three years, Todd had been using his position as senior compliance officer at Vance Logistics to funnel millions of dollars into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Panama. He had created dozens of shell corporations, fabricated shipping invoices, and bribed internal auditors—including Mark Henderson, the notary public who had signed the forged custody decree.
When top executives at Vance Logistics began an internal audit in late September, Todd realized his corporate embezzlement was weeks away from being discovered.
That was when his desperate timeline accelerated.
He didn't just want to take Maya to spite me; he needed to flee the United States before the federal financial fraud warrants were issued. He had planned to use the forged custody agreement to legally extract Maya from the country, change her name using fraudulent foreign documents, and force her to live as a captive dependent in a private, gated compound he had purchased near San José, Costa Rica.
Had I arrived at his house twenty minutes later on that cold November night... had Maya collapsed somewhere down the street where no one could see her... Todd’s terrifying grand design would have succeeded.
On a bright, clear afternoon in mid-December, Dana Price walked into my office in downtown Columbus, carrying a bottle of vintage champagne and a thick blue leather binder.
She set the binder down on my desk with a satisfying THUD.
“What’s this?” I asked, looking up from my work blueprints.
“That, my dear friend,” Dana declared with a radiant smile, “is the final, non-appealable Decree of Absolute Judicial Termination.”
I opened the blue binder.
Inside were the signed orders from the Franklin County Domestic Relations Court:
Todd Vance’s parental rights regarding Maya Douglas are permanently, irrevocably terminated.
All prior custody agreements, visitation rights, and communication privileges are rendered null and void.
Maya’s legal surname is officially restored exclusively to Douglas.
A full civil judgment of $2.4 million is awarded to Erin Douglas from Todd Vance’s seized domestic assets, covering medical expenses, therapy funds, legal costs, and punitive damages.
I ran my fingers over the official gold court seal stamped at the bottom of the decree.
“He signed it?” I asked quietly.
“He had no choice,” Dana explained, sitting down in the chair opposite me. “The U.S. Attorney offered him a plea deal to avoid life in maximum security: thirty-five years in federal prison with no possibility of parole, in exchange for surrendering all domestic assets, signing the termination of parental rights, and pleading guilty to all counts.”
“Thirty-five years,” I repeated softly.
“He’s forty-two years old, Erin,” Dana noted coldly. “He won't even be eligible to look at a parole board until he’s seventy-seven. He will spend the rest of his functional life behind thick concrete walls and steel bars.”
I closed the binder, feeling a deep, profound wave of relief wash through my chest.
The legal nightmare was officially, permanently over. The forged document that Todd had created to steal my daughter had ultimately become the absolute instrument of his own total destruction.
“How is Maya doing?” Dana asked gently.
I smiled, a genuine warmth filling my eyes. “Come look.”
I pulled out my phone and played a short video clip recorded the evening before.
In the video, Maya was standing in our warm, brightly lit kitchen, laughing as she tossed flour across the counter while baking gingerbread cookies with her two best friends from high school. Her face was full of life, her cheeks pink, her dark eyes sparkling with genuine joy and laughter.
The shadow of fear that had haunted her for six months was gone, replaced by the light of a young girl who finally felt safe, cherished, and completely free.

Dana watched the video, tears shining in her eyes. “She looks beautiful, Erin.”
“She is beautiful,” I whispered, looking at my glowing daughter on the screen. “And she is finally home.”
