Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Syndicate

Three days passed. The Vale estate was quiet, but it was the deceptive quiet of an armored warship sailing through calm waters before a storm.

Noah spent the first forty-eight hours sleeping, his body recovering from the intense physical drain of his miraculous gift. When he finally woke up, he was greeted not by cold medical equipment or dark rooms, but by a bright master bedroom overlooking the rose gardens.

Claire had personally selected his clothes—soft cashmere sweaters, warm pants, and his very first pair of brand-new leather shoes. When Noah put those shoes on, he walked around his room for an hour straight, staring down at his feet as if he had been given a royal crown.

Leo and Lila never left his side. My twins, completely healed and overflowing with boundless energy, treated Noah not like a stranger or a medical anomaly, but like a long-lost hero brother. They shared their toys, taught him how to play video games, and sat beside him during grand meals where Noah tasted steak, fresh fruit, and rich chocolates for the very first time in his life.

For the first time in eight years, I heard true, unrestrained laughter echoing through the halls of my mansion.

However, down in the soundproofed basement office of the estate, my reality was far from peaceful.

Marcus stood across from my heavy mahogany desk, tossing a thick black dossier onto the blotter. "We found where he came from, Boss."

I picked up the file, opening it under the desk lamp. The pages were filled with grainy satellite photos, police reports, and intelligence summaries.

"Project Lazarus," Marcus explained, his scarred face grim. "It was a black-market medical facility hidden inside an abandoned industrial complex near the southern docks. Financed off-shore, operating entirely off the grid. They were purchasing orphaned children and runaways from human traffickers, trying to isolate unusual biological traits."

My jaw clenched so tight my teeth threatened to crack. "Who was running it, Marcus?"

Marcus leaned in, dropping his voice. "Don Sal Morello."

My eyes narrowed into razor-thin slits. Don Morello was the head of the Morello syndicate—my fiercest rival in the region. For a decade, we had maintained a bloody, uneasy truce, dividing the city's territory down the middle. I knew Morello was a ruthless dog engaged in extortion, drug smuggling, and weapons running, but this... this went far beyond standard mafia warfare.

"Morello discovered the boy’s gift eight months ago," Marcus continued. "He kept Noah locked in an underground cell, using him to heal his high-ranking lieutenants and crooked politicians who had been shot or injured in turf wars. Noah escaped three months ago during a fire in the facility's power generator."

"And Morello is looking for him?"

"Every lowlife on the east coast is searching for the kid, Boss," Marcus nodded grimly. "There's a ten-million-dollar bounty on Noah's head, dead or alive. And worse... Morello’s lieutenants were at the gala three nights ago. They saw Noah kneel in front of your twins. They saw Leo and Lila walk."

I closed the dossier slowly, the heavy paper snapping shut like a gunshot in the silent office.

My joke at the gala had revealed the greatest secret in the city. Morello now knew that his prized asset—the miracle boy he had lost three months ago—was sitting inside the fortress of his greatest enemy.

Suddenly, my desk phone rang—a secure line that only three people in the world had the number to.

I picked up the receiver, keeping my voice utterly devoid of emotion. "Vale."

A raspy, wet laugh came through the speaker. "Richard. I hear you adopted a new pet three nights ago."

It was Don Morello.

"He's not a pet, Don," I said coldly, leaning back in my leather chair, my hand casually resting on the silver handle of the revolver inside my desk drawer. "He is my son. Legally, officially, and permanently."

A heavy pause settled over the line before Morello’s voice turned into a venomous growl. "That boy belongs to me, Vale. He is worth billions. He is the future of medicine, power, and war. Hand him over by midnight tonight, or I will bring every soldier I have to your front door and tear your palace down brick by brick."

I stood up slowly, looking out the reinforced glass window of my basement office toward the manicured gardens above, where I could hear the faint sound of my three children playing in the afternoon sun.

"Morello," I said softly, my voice carrying a quiet, terrifying certainty. "I suggest you bring every soldier you have. Because if you don't kill me tonight... I will personally drag you into the river."

May you like

I hung up the phone, looking at Marcus.

"Lock the doors," I ordered, my eyes cold as ice. "War is here."
