Chapter 9 - The Ledger of the Dead

Daniel stepped down the first three concrete stairs, his flashlight beam fading against the bright, clinical illumination of the underground vault.
The subterranean room was fifty feet wide, constructed of reinforced waterproof concrete. Along the back wall sat rows of heavy steel security lockers, each marked with digital keypads and international customs seals. On a central steel desk sat three high-end server towers, their blue activity lights flashing furiously as files were wiped and overwritten in real time.
"You're alive," Daniel said, his voice flat, standing on the bottom step.
"Alive, and managing a enterprise that makes your logistics company look like a corner newsstand," William replied, leaning lightly on his ivory cane. "You built a beautiful front, son. Carter Technologies provided the perfect digital umbrella for our operations. Clean, respectable, publicly traded... and completely oblivious."
"You used my company to traffic illegal assets," Daniel said, taking another step into the room. "You used my daughter's inheritance. And when Emily found out, you had her killed."
William’s expression didn't soften. He took a slow step forward, his cane clicking against the polished concrete floor.
"Emily was collateral damage," William said coldly, as if discussing a bad quarterly earnings report. "She was reckless. She thought she could take down an international network with a flash drive and a police report. She forced my hand, Daniel. Just as you are forcing my hand right now."
William raised his left hand. From the shadows behind the server racks, two armed men dressed in black tactical gear stepped out, their submachine guns raised and pointed straight at Daniel’s chest.
"I didn't want it to end like this," William said, reaching into his overcoat and pulling out a small remote detonation device with a glowing red arming switch. "I gave you every opportunity to be a quiet executive. I gave you Victoria to keep you distracted. I gave you wealth beyond measure. But you inherited your mother's stubborn, tragic need for the truth."
William looked past Daniel, up toward the open iron grate leading to the warehouse floor above.
"Where is the notebook, Daniel?" William asked quietly. "Give me the final clearance codes for the Nevis accounts, and I will let you take the child and walk away. I will disappear again, and you can tell the world whatever story helps you sleep at night."
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He didn't pull out the clearance codes. He pulled out the small brass key stamped 042.
"You're too late, Father," Daniel said softly.
He raised his thumb and pressed a small red button on the side of his tactical radio.

"Marcus," Daniel said into the mic attached to his lapel. "Execute override protocol Alpha-One."
High above the warehouse, the night sky erupted.
