Chapter 5 - SHADOWS IN THE CELLAR

The air in the subterranean tunnels beneath the Whitmore estate smelled of damp earth, centuries-old wine, and moldering stone.

Ethan moved through the dark like a ghost, his shoes making zero sound on the wet cobblestones. He had bypassed the main corridors, using the narrow utility crawlspaces that only he and his late father had known existed.

In his left hand, he held his Sig Sauer; in his right, he carried a tactical earpiece he had pulled from a wall-mounted internal comms box.

Through the earpiece, he could hear Knox’s men communicating on an encrypted frequency.

“Team Alpha, sweep the ground floor. Team Beta, secure the nursery and the kitchens. Command says negative survivors.”

Ethan’s pulse spiked. The kitchens.

He accelerated his pace, slipping through a narrow iron grate that opened into the pantry behind the estate’s massive commercial kitchen.

Through the wooden slats of the pantry door, Ethan saw Mrs. Gable standing near the stainless steel preparation counters. She was a woman in her late sixties, her silver hair pulled back in a neat bun, holding Clara tightly against her apron.

Standing six feet away from her was one of Knox’s tactical guards, holding an assault rifle pointed directly at the old woman’s chest.

“Where is the boss, old woman?” the guard growled, stepping closer. “And why do you have the kid?”

“Mr. Ethan told me to watch her!” Mrs. Gable declared, her voice remarkably steady despite the rifle aimed at her heart. “You have no right to come into my kitchen with weapons!”

“Command gave the order,” the guard said cold-bloodedly, raising the rifle to his eye. “Clear the witnesses.”

Before the guard’s finger could apply pressure to the trigger, Ethan burst through the pantry door like a shadow unleashed.

PFT! PFT!

Ethan’s suppressed Sig Sauer coughed twice in rapid succession.

Both rounds struck the guard precisely behind his left ear. The man collapsed onto the tile floor without making a sound, his rifle skittering across the polished stainless steel.

Clara gasped, burying her face into Mrs. Gable’s chest, but the old woman didn't scream. She looked at Ethan, her eyes filled with a sad, knowing light that told Ethan everything he needed to know.

“You knew too, didn't you, Mrs. Gable?” Ethan asked quietly, stepping over the fallen operative to retrieve the man’s tactical radio and security keycard.

“I promised your father I would stay silent until you were strong enough to face it, Ethan,” Mrs. Gable whispered, her hands gently smoothing Clara’s dark curls. “Your mother... she tried to take you away when you were six. Your father locked her up to protect the family’s seat on the Commission. It was a wicked thing. A dark, terrible thing.”

“Is she still alive?” Ethan demanded, his voice desperate for the ultimate truth.

“She was alive six months ago when Knox brought this child to the house,” Mrs. Gable confirmed, nodding toward Clara. “Knox brought Clara here to use as leverage against your mother’s supporters in Zurich. Ethan, you cannot stay in New York. The moment Knox releases the alert, the entire Commission will hunt you down.”

Ethan looked down at Clara. The child looked up at him with wide, tear-filled dark eyes—the exact same shade of brown as his own.

He crouched down, placing his large, scarred hand over her small shoulder.

“I’m sorry I didn't see it sooner, little sister,” Ethan whispered softly, a profound, unfamiliar warmth piercing through his cold exterior.

Clara offered a tiny, trembling smile, holding her brown teddy bear tighter against her chest. “Did you find the box?”

“I found it,” Ethan said. He stood up, looking at Mrs. Gable. “There’s an armored sedan parked in the carriage house behind the wine cellar. Take the service tunnel out to the state route. My private pilot is waiting at a secondary airstrip in New Jersey.”

“What about you, Ethan?” Mrs. Gable asked, fear creeping into her voice.

Ethan checked the magazine of his pistol, a cold, predatory smile playing across his lips.

“I have a meeting with Knox,” Ethan said smoothly. “And then I’m going to Switzerland to bring my mother home.”
