Chapter 5 - The Transformation

At 12:45 PM, a slick black Lincoln Town Car pulled up to the curb outside a high-end women's boutique on Thayer Street.
The driver, a stocky man in a dark suit with a quiet, watchful demeanor named Marco, opened the rear door for Karen.
"Mr. Marchetti ordered three suits, five silk blouses, and two pairs of Italian leather shoes for you, Miss Delaney," Marco said respectfully, holding out two large glossy shopping bags. "He said you should change in the fitting room before we head to the office."
Karen looked at the clothes inside the bags. Tailored wool blazers, crisp white silk shirts, dark tailored trousers, and soft leather pumps that smelled of expensive craftsmanship.
Twenty minutes later, Karen stepped out of the boutique fitting room and looked at her reflection in the full-length mirror.
She barely recognized the woman standing before her.
The oversized, stained yellow sweater and faded jeans were gone. In their place stood a tall, poised woman wearing a midnight-blue tailored suit that fitted her shoulders perfectly. The high collar of the silk blouse covered the faint scars on her collarbone. Her hair had been pulled back into an elegant, low knot, revealing her clean, sharp jawline.
Her damaged hands were neatly moisturized, covered by soft leather driving gloves that Dante had included in the bags.
She looked powerful. She looked dangerous. She looked like someone who belonged in a high-floor boardroom overlooking the harbor.
"Very nice, Miss Delaney," Marco noted with a quiet nod as she stepped back into the car. "Mr. Marchetti is waiting for you on the third floor."
The corporate headquarters of Marchetti Enterprises did not look like the front for a crime syndicate. It occupied the top two floors of an historic brick building on Federal Hill, featuring exposed brick walls, sleek glass partitions, and quiet executive suites where dozens of accountants, lawyers, and logistics coordinators worked in silent concentration.
Marco led Karen down a long, carpeted hallway, stopping outside a set of double frosted-glass doors labeled Executive Financial Services.
He opened the door without knocking.
Dante Marchetti sat at a large oval mahogany table surrounded by three men in dark suits and an elderly man with thick glasses who was packing a leather briefcase.
Dante looked up as Karen entered the room.
His dark eyes swept slowly over her new suit, her polished posture, and her steady, calm expression. A subtle, approving nod passed between them.
"Gentlemen, this is Karen Delaney," Dante announced to the room, his voice calm and absolute. "She is taking over Mr. Rossi’s position as Chief Financial Auditor for our restaurant and hospitality holdings starting today."
The three lawyers looked at her with polite surprise, nodding respectfully.
"Miss Delaney," the elderly man—Mr. Rossi—said, stepping forward with a thin smile. "I’ve spent forty years balancing Dante’s books. They aren't easy. There are... complexities in our distribution ledgers that require a sharp mind and absolute confidentiality."
"I took advanced forensic accounting at Rhode Island College, Mr. Rossi," Karen replied smoothly, her voice clear and completely devoid of hesitation. "I am well acquainted with complexity."
Dante stood up from the table, motioning for the legal team to leave the room. Once the heavy doors closed behind them, he walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city.
"Your former boss, Frank, called me twenty minutes ago," Dante said softly, looking out at the skyline. "He was complaining that his night sanitation worker didn't show up to clean the grease traps behind the kitchen today."
Karen felt a faint smile touch her lips. "What did you tell him, Mr. Marchetti?"
May you like
Dante turned around, looking at her with a quiet, dangerous glint in his dark eyes.
"I told him that Employee 317 had been permanently reassigned," Dante said. "And then I fired him for failing to fix my brass faucet."
