Chapter 7 - The Playground Incident

By three o'clock that afternoon, Hannah was waiting outside the front gates of St. Augustine's Preparatory Academy.

When the bell rang, dozens of children in dark uniforms poured out onto the brick courtyard, laughing, shouting, and running toward their waiting parents and drivers.

Hannah stood near the archway, her eyes searching the crowd. She saw Matthew walking slowly behind the other students, his black leather backpack hanging low on his shoulders, his head bowed as he stared at his shoes.

Two boys—slightly taller and wearing pristine wool blazers—stepped directly into Matthew's path, blocking him from reaching the gate.

Hannah recognized one of them from Principal Holloway's description: Oliver Wellington.

"Hey, Davis!" Oliver sneered, shoving Matthew's shoulder roughly. "My dad said your father is a crook! He said that's why nobody wants to play with you!"

Matthew stumbled back, his small face instantly flushing red with rage. His fists clenched tightly at his sides, his chest heaving as he prepared to throw himself at the older boy.

"Matthew!" Hannah's clear, firm voice cut through the courtyard before the situation could escalate.

She walked quickly over to the boys, stepping right between Matthew and Oliver. She didn't raise her voice, nor did she look angry, but her posture was calm, strong, and completely commanding.

"Is there a problem here, boys?" Hannah asked smoothly.

Oliver looked up at Hannah, startled by her sudden presence. "He... he bumped into me!"

"I saw what happened, Oliver," Hannah said gently, but with a firm edge that made the boy look away. "It's not polite to shove people or speak unkindly about their families. I think you should head to your car now—your driver is waiting by the curb."

Oliver glared at her, then turned and ran off toward a sleek white Bentley parked down the street.

Hannah turned around and knelt down in front of Matthew. The boy was trembling, his eyes burning with tears of frustration and humiliation.

"I was gonna hit him," Matthew growled, his tiny voice shaking with anger. "I was gonna smash his face!"

Hannah didn't scold him. Instead, she gently placed her hands on his trembling shoulders, looking straight into his angry eyes.

"I know you were mad, Matthew," Hannah said softly. "And it hurts when people say mean things about people we love."

Matthew looked at her, his lip quivering. "They all hate me."

"They don't know you, sweetheart," Hannah corrected gently, wiping a stray tear from his cheek with her thumb. "They see a big house and expensive clothes, and they get scared. But you don't have to fight everyone who says something silly. Fighting just gives them what they want."

"What do they want?" Matthew asked quietly.

"They want to make you feel small," Hannah explained softly, taking his hand in hers and standing up. "But you aren't small, Matthew. You're strong, smart, and kind. And as long as you know who you are, nobody's words can ever hurt you."

Matthew looked at their joined hands, feeling the warm, steady grip of someone who was protecting him not because they were ordered to, but because they cared.

"Can we get ice cream?" Matthew asked in a tiny voice.

May you like

Hannah laughed, a bright, cheerful sound that echoed across the stone courtyard. "Vanilla or chocolate?"

"Chocolate," Matthew smiled. "With a cherry on top."
