Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

One month later.
The Chicago spring had finally arrived, clearing away the winter rain and leaving Lake Michigan a brilliant, sparkling turquoise under a clear blue sky.
The gardens of the Vale estate were in full bloom. Red tulips, white roses, and dark purple irises lined the stone pathways that meandered down toward the private pier.
Dominic Vale sat on a wrought-iron bench on the main terrace, enjoying the afternoon sun. He wore a gray suit without a tie, his cane resting against the bench legs—not because he needed it to walk, but out of habit.
In the middle of the green lawn, four-year-old Ellie was running around with a small golden retriever puppy that Dominic had purchased for her birthday two weeks ago. Her laughter echoed bright and clear across the grass, bouncing off the stone walls of the estate.
Clare walked out onto the terrace carrying a silver tray with fresh lemonade and a plate of warm blueberry scones.
She wore a simple, elegant blue summer dress, her blond hair pulled back into a neat braid. The weary, terrified expression she had worn for months had completely vanished, replaced by a calm, confident grace that suited her role as the manager of the Vale residence.
"She hasn't stopped running for two hours," Clare said with a smile, setting the tray down on the small iron table beside Dominic. "That puppy is going to sleep for three days."
"That's the idea," Dominic replied, taking a glass of lemonade. "It keeps her from trying to disassemble the garden sprinkler system."
Clare laughed—a soft, musical sound that made Dominic look up at her.
"She did ask the gardener how the valves work yesterday," Clare admitted, sitting down on the bench beside him. "He actually showed her. He said she has an incredible mind for patterns."
Dominic looked out at the lawn, watching Ellie tumble into the grass with the puppy.
"She does," Dominic agreed softly. "She sees how things fit together. She sees when something is out of place."
He turned his head to look at Clare.
"How are the house accounts looking?" he asked.
"Completely balanced," Clare replied proudly. "We reduced the food waste in the staff kitchen by twenty percent, and the new security contractors you hired for the South Gate have been integrated without any disruption."
She paused, looking at Dominic with deep, earnest gray eyes. "It feels like a real home now, Dominic. Not just a fortress."
Dominic rested his arm along the back of the iron bench. "It wasn't a home before you two arrived, Clare. It was just an office where I slept."
Clare felt a warm blush creep up her neck. She reached out, placing her hand gently over Dominic's on the iron bench.
"You protected us," Clare whispered. "Nobody has ever protected us before."
Dominic looked down at her small, soft hand resting over his heavy, scarred knuckles. He didn't pull away. He turned his hand over, closing his fingers gently around hers.
May you like
"I will always protect you, Clare," Dominic said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an absolute, unbreakable conviction. "Both of you. This house belongs to Ellie as much as it belongs to me."
Clare smiled, tears of quiet happiness glistening in her eyes as she leaned her head gently against his shoulder, watching their daughter play under the warm afternoon sun.
