Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The silence in the boardroom was absolute.
Richard stared at me, his chest heaving, his hands shaking so violently he had to grip the edge of the table to keep his legs from buckling beneath him.
"You... you survived?" he stammered, his eyes darting frantically from my face down to my stomach, where my hand rested protective over my bump. "The baby... the drop was two thousand feet..."
"Twelve hundred feet, actually," I corrected him, stopping five feet away from him. "And a high-durability parasail deploys remarkably well when you know it's coming."
Donald Vance, Richard’s attorney, backed away slowly toward the door, clutching his briefcase, but two federal officers stepped in front of him, blocking the exit.
"Amelia!" Richard suddenly burst out, his sociopathic instincts frantically attempting to recalibrate. He stumbled forward, his hands outstretched, tears instantly welling in his eyes again. "My God, Amelia! You're alive! It’s a miracle! I thought I lost you! I thought you fell—"
"Don't touch me," I said, my voice cutting through his act like a razor.
Richard froze in mid-stride.
"You pushed me, Richard," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the room, where the live audio feed was being broadcast directly to the SEC oversight committee and recorded on the room's security system. "You brought me onto that helicopter under the pretense of an anniversary ride. You unlatched the safety door, grabbed my arm, and shoved me into the Pacific Ocean."
"No!" Richard shrieked, looking wildly around the room at the board members, who were staring at him with unadulterated disgust. "That’s not true! She’s confused! She suffered head trauma from the fall! It was an accident! I tried to save her!"
"Is that why you called Julian Mercer twenty minutes after landing?" I asked, pulling a sleek tablet from my briefcase.
I tapped the screen.
The high-definition audio recording of Richard’s conversation in the St. Regis penthouse filled the boardroom:
Mercer: Is it done? Richard: She’s in the water. No body will be found. The Coast Guard is searching the reef zone... By next week, I control the firm.
Richard looked as if he had been struck by lightning.
"And as for the 2022 trust agreement your attorney mentioned," I continued, turning to the board. "Four months ago, after I discovered Richard had taken out a fifty-million-dollar key-man insurance policy on my life through an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands, I executed a complete estate overhaul."
I handed a notarized legal folder to Arthur Pendelton.
"The Hayes Family Irrevocable Living Trust was updated in July," I announced. "All voting shares, equity control, and personal assets are held in an independent institutional trust managed by Pendelton & Associates. In the event of my death or incapacitation, Richard Sterling is explicitly disinherited, barred from holding any corporate officer position, and restricted from receiving a single dollar from the estate."
"You... you set me up..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking, his eyes wide with a terrifying combination of rage and realization.
"You set yourself up, Richard," I said softly. "You let your greed swallow your intelligence."
Lead Detective Rodriguez stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Richard Sterling," Detective Rodriguez declared, grabbing Richard’s arm and pinning it behind his back. "You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain."
As the steel cuffs clicked tightly around Richard’s wrists, the door to the boardroom opened once again.
Julian Mercer was pushed into the room by two federal agents, already wearing handcuffs.
Richard looked at Mercer, then looked back at me, his face contorted in a terrifying mask of pure, ugly rage.

"You ruined me!" Richard screamed as the officers dragged him backward toward the elevator. "I was going to have it all! You were supposed to die in that water, Amelia! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DIE!"
"I don't die easily, Richard," I said, standing tall as the elevator doors closed on his screaming face. "And neither does my company."
