Chapter 9 - The Bloodline

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Ashport, bathing Raven Hill in a bright, pristine golden light.

For the first time in four years, the dark, foreboding atmosphere of the estate felt lifted. The heavy curtains in the grand parlor were pulled back, allowing the sunshine to illuminate the polished mahogany floors and vibrant oil paintings.

A white sedan pulled up to the front entrance of the mansion.

I stood on the front porch beside Evelyn and Ronan as the rear door opened. Vance stepped out, opening the door for Mrs. Higgins and a little girl wearing a bright yellow winter coat with her favorite pink rabbit backpack.

Poppy stepped onto the gravel driveway, her big brown eyes wide with absolute awe as she looked up at the towering marble pillars and grand architecture of Raven Hill.

"Mommy!" Poppy called out, running up the stone steps into my open arms.

I caught her, swinging her around, kissing her rosy cheeks as she giggled happily. "Hey, my sweet girl!"

"Is this a castle, Mommy?" Poppy whispered, looking around at the grand estate in wonder. "Are you a princess now?"

I laughed softly, setting her down on her feet. "No, baby. But there are some very special people who have been waiting a long time to meet you."

I turned Poppy around to face Evelyn and Ronan.

Evelyn dropped to her knees right there on the hard stone porch, completely unconcerned with her elegant silk dress. Tears flowed freely down her face as she looked at Poppy—seeing her dead son’s face, his smile, his very soul living on in this beautiful, vibrant little girl.

"Hello, little one," Evelyn said, her voice shaking with immense love.

Poppy looked at Evelyn, then tilted her head, her sharp little mind taking in the old woman's kind eyes. Slowly, Poppy raised her small hand and signed: “Are you my grandmother?”

Evelyn gasped, pressing her hand over her heart, laughing through her tears as she signed back: “Yes, my sweet child. I am your grandmother.”

Evelyn pulled Poppy into a warm, gentle hug, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.

Standing beside them, Ronan looked down at his niece, his hardened expression melting into a warm, protective smile. He knelt down beside his mother and Poppy, extending his hand.

"I'm your Uncle Ronan," he said softly. "And I promise you, little bird... no one in this world will ever hurt you or your mother again."

Poppy looked at Ronan, then looked at his massive dragon tattoo peeking out from his collar, smiling bright. "You look like a superhero, Uncle Ronan!"

Ronan let out a deep, genuine laugh—a sound that hadn't echoed through Raven Hill in four years.
