Chapter 9 - The Verdict

Six months later.
The County Superior Courthouse was quiet as the jury re-entered the grand courtroom after four hours of deliberation.
I sat in the front row, wearing a tailored navy suit. Beside me sat my daughter Lily, looking healthy, vibrant, and happy in a yellow floral dress, her jaw completely healed, her black eye long gone, her hair styled in small pigtails.
At the defense table, Vanessa and Eleanor sat beside two overworked public defenders.
Vanessa looked like a shell of a human being—her hair cut short, her face gaunt, her eyes hollow, stripped of all her former arrogance and entitlement. Eleanor sat beside her, staring blankly at the floorboards, her spirit entirely crushed.
The judge slammed the gavel down.
"Will the foreperson please stand?" Judge Vance commanded. "Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"
A tall, middle-aged man in the jury box stood up, holding a white sheet of paper. "We have, Your Honor."
"On Count One: Felony Assault and Child Abuse against defendant Vanessa Vance, how do you find?"
"We find the defendant, Vanessa Vance... GUILTY," the foreperson declared firmly.
Vanessa let out a choked scream, burying her face in her arms on the table, sobbing hysterically.
"On Count Two: Felony Accessory to Child Abuse and False Imprisonment against defendant Eleanor Vance, how do you find?"
"We find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... GUILTY," the foreperson announced.
Eleanor didn't scream. She simply closed her eyes, two slow tears rolling down her wrinkled cheeks as her head dropped against her chest.
Judge Vance looked over her glasses at the defense table, her voice ringing with absolute authority through the silent courtroom.
"Vanessa Vance," Judge Vance declared, "for the brutal assault of a defenceless five-year-old child, you are hereby sentenced to seven years at the State Women’s Correctional Facility, without the possibility of parole for the first four years."
Vanessa’s public defender tried to rub her back, but Vanessa pushed him away, weeping uncontrollably as two bailiffs stepped forward and pulled her hands behind her back, snapping the heavy steel cuffs around her wrists once more.
"Eleanor Vance," Judge Vance continued, her eyes fixed on my mother, "for your disgraceful betrayal of your duty as a grandmother, for physically restraining the victim’s mother, and for your abhorrent attempts to intimidate witnesses, you are hereby sentenced to three years in state custody."
CRACK!
The gavel echoed through the room like a final, unyielding thunderclap.
The bailiffs led Vanessa and Eleanor toward the side holding cell door.
As Eleanor was being pulled through the doorway, she turned her head back one last time, looking at me and Lily sitting in the sunlight of the gallery. Her lips trembled, her eyes pleading for a shred of mercy, a sign of love, a single drop of forgiveness.

I didn't smile. I didn't scowl.
I simply lifted my hand, rested it gently over Lily’s shoulder, and looked away, watching the steel door swing shut between us forever.
