Chapter 8 - The Shattered Glass

The grand ballroom collapsed into utter, unbridled chaos.

Guests scrambled over overturned chairs, trying frantically to exit the venue as the full magnitude of the scandal broke over the room. Prominent politicians covered their faces to avoid the flashbulbs of guest smartphones that were now recording the massive screen.

Senator Malcolm Cross reached the stage, his face purple with rage, his tuxedo shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He grabbed a heavy crystal pitcher from a serving table and hurled it directly at the AV projection array, but the glass shattered harmlessly against the protective casing, leaving the incriminating financial ledgers shining brightly above his head.

“Adrian!” Malcolm screamed, pointing a trembling finger at his son-in-law. “You engineered this! You destroyed your own father’s memory! You ruined your own firm!”

“My father ruined himself the day he partnered with you, Senator,” Adrian said, stepping down from the head table platform, his voice calm and cold. “I am simply liquidating the debt.”

Vivian leapt from her chair, her expensive lace wedding gown catching on the edge of the mahogany table, tearing a massive rift through the delicate embroidery. She ran toward Adrian, her manicured nails reaching for his face like talons.

“You traitor!” she shrieked, her voice cracking into a hysterical scream. “I was going to give you everything! My father was going to make you an ambassador! You traded me for a common maid!”

Before she could reach Adrian, a calm, quiet figure stepped out from behind the head table pillar, blocking her path.

It was Rosa Delgado.

Rosa stood tall, her posture straight, her dark eyes looking down at Vivian with absolute, unshakeable power. She had taken off her server apron, wearing a simple, elegant dark suit beneath it, her fiberglass cast visible at her wrist.

Vivian froze. She stared at Rosa as if looking at a ghost returned from the grave.

“You...” Vivian whispered, her voice trembling violently. “You were supposed to be broken... you were supposed to be dead!”

“I survived the fall, Vivian,” Rosa said, her voice dropping into a deep, velvety tone that silenced the immediate area. “And unlike you, I kept my receipts.”

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the rear of the grand ballroom were thrown open with a violent, metallic crash.

A squad of twenty Federal Marshals, accompanied by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service, marched into the room in tactical gear, led by a female prosecutor holding a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.

“Federal agents!” the lead prosecutor announced, her voice amplified by a megaphone. “Everyone stay in your seats! This room is now an active federal crime scene!”

The marshals moved with swift, lethal efficiency. Two agents stepped onto the elevated stage, stepping past the frozen guests, and approached Senator Malcolm Cross.

“Malcolm Cross,” the marshal declared, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around the senator’s wrists. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and obstruction of justice.”

“Do you know who I am?!” Malcolm roared, struggling against the steel cuffs as guests whipped out their phones to capture his arrest. “I am a Senior United States Senator! You cannot touch me!”

“Your immunity was revoked twenty minutes ago, Senator,” the prosecutor replied flatly.

Two more female federal agents stepped onto the head table platform, moving directly toward Vivian Cross.

Vivian backed away frantically, her tears ruining her expensive makeup, leaving black streaks down her pale face. “No! Get away from me! Adrian, tell them! Tell them I’m your wife! Tell them I have marital immunity!”

Adrian looked at her, his expression entirely devoid of pity.

He reached out, took her hand one last time, unclasped the platinum wedding band he had placed on her finger thirty minutes prior, and pulled it smoothly off her hand.

He dropped the ring into her champagne flute, where it sank to the bottom with a quiet clink.

“The wedding is over, Vivian,” Adrian said softly.

The female agents grabbed Vivian’s arms, pulling her hands behind her back and snapping the steel cuffs securely around her wrists.

Vivian screamed hysterically as she was dragged down the main carpeted aisle—the same carpet she had glided down thirty minutes earlier as a queen—her expensive lace gown trailing in the spilled champagne and broken crystal littering the floor.
