Chapter 8 - The Trial of Gregory Davis

Seven months later.

The main courtroom of the Franklin County Hall of Justice was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists, legal scholars, television crews, and curious citizens occupied every wooden pew, whispering quietly as they waited for the verdict.

At the defense table sat Gregory Davis.

In seven months, the sixty-two-year-old man had aged twenty years. His hair was completely white, thin and unkempt. His proud, intimidating posture was gone, replaced by a sunken, defeated slouch. He wore a plain dark suit provided by his court-appointed public defender—his high-priced private defense attorneys having withdrawn from the case five months ago when all of his seized assets were officially frozen by the state.

Beside him sat Brenda and Melanie, both wearing plain grey prison jumpsuits, their hands cuffed at their waists, their eyes dull and red from months in county custody.

At the front row of the gallery sat Sadie and Wyatt.

Sadie looked stunning. She wore a tailored ivory pantsuit, her dark hair pinned back, her posture straight and regal. The scar on her cheek was barely visible now—a thin, fine silver line that added an air of fierce, unshakeable maturity to her exquisite features. Beside her, holding her hand, was Wyatt, dressed in a sharp navy suit.

Judge Harrison, a stern, grey-haired magistrate known for his zero-tolerance policy toward violent crimes, stepped onto the bench.

"Court will come to order," Judge Harrison announced, his gavel falling with a sharp, echoing crack. "In the matter of the State of Ohio versus Gregory Davis, Brenda Davis, and Melanie Davis. Has the jury reached a verdict?"

The jury foreman, a middle-aged schoolteacher, stood up. "We have, Your Honor."

The courtroom went dead silent.

"On count one, Felonious Assault with a Deadly Weapon against Gregory Davis... how do you find?"

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreman declared clearly.

Brenda let out a muted sob, burying her face in her cuffed hands.

"On count two, Attempted Pre-meditated Murder against Gregory Davis..."

"Guilty, Your Honor."

Gregory’s head dropped onto the defense table.

"On counts three through twelve, including Grand Larceny, Systematic Probate Fraud, Unlawful Restraint of an Elderly Person, and Tampering with Evidence against Gregory Davis..."

"Guilty on all counts, Your Honor."

The foreman turned his paper to the next page.

"On counts thirteen through eighteen, including Conspiracy to Commit Grand Fraud, Accomplice to Asset Theft, and Obstruction of Justice against Brenda Davis..."

"Guilty on all counts, Your Honor."

"And on counts nineteen through twenty-four against Melanie Davis..."

"Guilty on all counts, Your Honor."

Melanie burst into wild, hysterical screams, kicking her legs against the defense table as two female bailiffs gripped her shoulders to keep her seated. "No! No! It wasn't me! It was my father! I didn't do anything wrong! Sadie, tell them! Sadie, please!"

Sadie didn't blink. She sat perfectly still, her single cool, measured gaze fixed on her sister without a shred of pity.

Judge Harrison leaned over his bench, his face dark with profound disgust as he looked down at the three defendants.

"In my thirty-four years on the judicial bench," Judge Harrison began, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls, "I have rarely witnessed a display of human depravity, greed, and cold-blooded cruelty as sickening as the one presented in this courtroom."

The judge pointed a stern finger at Gregory.

"Gregory Davis, you systematically stole from your own child for decades. You kept your aging brother locked in a room like an animal. And when your daughter sought nothing more than to build a life of her own with the man she loved, you attempted to destroy her face and take her life with a concrete block."

Judge Harrison grabbed his sentencing pen.

"For the charge of Attempted Murder and Felonious Assault, I sentence you, Gregory Davis, to twenty-eight years in the Ohio State Penitentiary without the possibility of parole. For the financial crimes and elder abuse, I add an additional fourteen years, to be served consecutively. You will die in prison, sir."

Gregory collapsed back into his chair, weeping openly as deputies handcuffed his ankles.

Judge Harrison turned his attention to Brenda and Melanie.

"Brenda Davis, for your active participation in this disgusting fraud and your cold-blooded encouragement of domestic violence, I sentence you to fifteen years at the Dayton Correctional Institution. Melanie Davis, for your co-conspiracy, grand theft, and perjury, I sentence you to eight years at the same facility."

The judge slammed his gavel down with a final, definitive thunder.

CRACK!

"Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs dragged the screaming, weeping trio through the rear side door toward the transport vans, Gregory turned his head one last time.

Through his tears, he looked at Sadie sitting in the front row.

Sadie didn't shout at him. She didn't mock him. She simply stood up, took Wyatt's arm, and turned her back on him completely, walking out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.
