Chapter 6 - The Final Ledger

The panic that had been simmering beneath the surface of the Gotham Botanical Gardens greenhouse finally boiled over into outright chaos.
Several prominent real estate developers who had partnered with my father on various Manhattan high-rise projects began murmuring frantically among themselves, their faces turning pale as they realized that Richard Sterling’s bankruptcy would trigger cross-default clauses across half the commercial real estate market in New York.
“Richard!” shouted Arthur Vance, a senior partner at a major architectural firm tied to Sterling Development’s latest skyscraper project. “What is this? Is this true? Are you bankrupt?”
Richard didn't answer. He couldn't. He stood frozen in the center of the patio, staring blankly at the cream-colored paper in Blake’s hand as if it were a death warrant written in blood.
“He’s not just bankrupt, Arthur,” Blake said calmly, turning his head to look at the crowd of terrified investors. “For the past three quarters, Sterling Development has been systematically misrepresenting its liabilities, inflating asset valuations, and siphoning escrow funds from commercial tenants to pay operational expenses. In legal terms, that’s not just insolvency. That’s securities fraud.”
My mother let out a shrill gasp and collapsed onto a velvet-upholstered wedding chair, sobbing uncontrollably into her lace handkerchief. Penelope was shaking so violently that her wedding veil fluttered in the evening breeze like a white flag of surrender.
Richard slowly raised his head. His eyes, bloodshot and filled with a desperate, pathetic mixture of rage and terror, locked onto mine.
“Claire…” he choked out, his voice trembling so badly he could barely form the syllables. “You... you did this. You plotted this. You infiltrated my company—you spied on me—just to destroy everything I built.”
I took a slow step forward, looking down at the man who had never once looked at me with pride.
“I didn't destroy your company, Dad,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of anger. “You built your company out of lies, glass, and other people’s money. I just stopped holding the roof up for you.”
“You’re my daughter!” Richard roared, finally snapping, his mask of corporate composure shattering completely. He lunged forward, his hands clawing at the air. “I gave you a roof over your head! I fed you! I paid for your education! And you stabbed me in the back with a billionaire husband you snuck around behind our backs to marry!”
Before Richard could take another step toward me, Blake moved.
It wasn't a violent movement, but it was absolute. Blake stepped directly into Richard’s path, his towering frame blocking my father completely, his glacial blue eyes flashing with a menace that made Richard stumble backward in terror.

“Touch her again, and I won't just foreclose on your company,” Blake whispered, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly quiet that only the front row could hear it. “I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your natural life behind bars in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.”
Richard froze, his chest heaving, sweat pouring down his pale forehead, ruining his expensive silk tie. He looked at Blake, then at me, and finally realized the terrifying truth: he had lost. Completely, utterly, and irreversibly.
