Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

Two years later.

The morning ocean mist was lifting slowly over the high cliffs of Cape May, New Jersey, revealing a brilliant, turquoise sea that stretched infinitely toward the horizon.

On the manicured lawn of the three-hundred-acre Vance seaside estate, a small, intimate family gathering was taking place under a white silk canopy set up near the edge of the dunes.

Two-year-old Alexander was running across the lush green grass, his small legs moving fast as he chased a golden retriever puppy that Gabriel had gifted him for his second birthday. His loud, joyful laughter echoed across the dunes, mixing with the gentle sound of the waves crashing against the beach below.

I sat at a wooden garden table wearing a white linen dress, holding a cup of fresh chamomile tea, watching my son with a warm, peaceful smile.

Beside me, my grandfather Gabriel sat reading the morning financial times, while Arthur Vance stood near the railing reviewing the expansion plans for the foundation’s third regional medical center in Chicago.

“Sarah,” Arthur said, looking up from his tablet with a bright smile. “The State Bar Association has officially awarded the foundation the 2026 Public Justice Leadership Medal for our work in reforming domestic violence protection laws.”

“That’s wonderful, Arthur,” I smiled, taking a sip of my tea. “Make sure Dr. Aris and the medical team are listed as co-recipients on the plaque. They earned it.”

A sleek black town car pulled quietly up the long gravel driveway, stopping near the edge of the lawn.

Commander Cross stepped out of the vehicle, wearing his tailored grey suit, and walked over to the canopy holding a single white leather folder.

“General. Mrs. Vance,” Cross bowed respectfully.

“What do you have, Cross?” Gabriel asked, setting his newspaper down on the table.

“The final probation review for Nora Sterling came through this morning,” Cross reported calmly. “Her federal conspiracy probation has been extended for another three years due to failure to complete her court-ordered community service hours in Ohio. She is currently working as an entry-level clerk at a regional retail store in Cleveland.”

I looked out over the lawn where Alexander was currently tumbling over the grass with the golden retriever puppy, both of them letting out happy, energetic sounds.

“Thank you, Cross,” I said softly. “You don't need to monitor her anymore.”

Cross raised an eyebrow slightly. “Ma'am?”

“Let them live their lives, Cross,” I explained, my voice completely serene and steady. “They are no longer a part of our story. Their choices brought them to where they are, and our choices brought us here.”

Cross looked at Gabriel, who gave a single, firm nod of concurrence.

“Understood, Mrs. Vance,” Cross bowed, closing his folder and stepping back toward his vehicle.

Gabriel turned his head, looking at me with eyes full of a quiet, profound respect that made my heart swell with pride.

“You’ve grown into a formidable leader, Sarah,” Gabriel said, his voice soft against the ocean breeze. “Your mother would be so proud to see the woman you’ve become.”

I reached across the table, taking my grandfather’s large, calloused hand in mine.

“I became the woman I needed to be to protect my son, Gabriel,” I said gently. “Just like you became the man you needed to be to protect me.”

Down on the grass, Alexander ran up the wooden steps of the deck, his small face flushed with excitement, his hands holding a bright yellow dandelion he had picked from the lawn.

“Mommy! Mommy!” Alexander cheered, holding the flower up to me with bright, sparkling brown eyes. “Look! I found a star!”

I bent down, picking up my beautiful, healthy, unbroken son and pulling him tight against my chest, burying my face in his soft hair while Gabriel laughed softly beside us.

The sun broke completely through the morning clouds, bathing the entire estate in a blinding, radiant golden light that chased away every remaining shadow of the past.

We were home. We were safe. And our horizon was completely unbroken.
