Chapter 8 - The Corner Office Purge

At 2:00 p.m., I walked through the sleek glass doors of Vance & Associates Wealth Management on the thirty-fourth floor of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper.
The office was quiet, luxurious, and filled with the soft hum of high-finance operations. Employees in tailored suits walked past with coffee cups, completely unaware that their managing partner’s world was forty-five seconds away from total demolition.
I didn't knock on Julian Vance’s heavy mahogany door. I pushed it open and walked right in.
Julian was sitting at his massive glass desk, reviewing a quarterly portfolio report. Sitting across from him was Chloe Bennett, holding a notebook.
When Julian looked up and saw me standing in his doorway, flanked by Arthur Vance and two NYPD Financial Crimes detectives, he didn't immediately panic. He was too smooth, too accustomed to being the most powerful man in the room.
“Clara?” Julian smiled smoothly, leaning back in his executive chair. “I thought you were in Paris attending to your personal sabbatical. What are you doing back in New York so soon?”
Chloe, however, knew instantly. Her face flushed pale, and she dropped her leather notebook onto the floor, her hands shaking violently as she recognized me from the camera feeds.
I walked up to Julian’s desk, pulled out a flash drive, and set it down on his polished desk.
“What’s this?” Julian asked, his smile faltering slightly.
“That is twenty-four hours of high-definition video and audio footage, Julian,” I said, resting my hands on the edge of his desk. “Including footage of Chloe sitting in my living room on Saturday, carrying my confidential trust files in her tote bag.”
Julian’s eyes flicked sharply toward Chloe, his cool composure finally cracking. “Chloe... what is she talking about?”
“She knows, Julian!” Chloe burst into tears, covering her face with her hands. “She knows about the Caymans routing! She knows about the $480,000!”
Julian’s face hardened into stone. He slowly closed his laptop lid and looked at me with cold, calculating eyes. “Clara, let’s be reasonable professionals here. Whatever financial discrepancies occurred in your secondary account can be fully restored within twenty-four hours. I can personally authorize a three-hundred-percent restitution payment to your trust today.”
“You think this is a settlement negotiation, Julian?” Arthur Vance stepped forward, laying a federal grand jury subpoena directly over Julian’s closed laptop. “You are under investigation for multi-state fiduciary fraud, embezzlement, corporate espionage, and conspiracy.”
“You can't prove I authorized those transfers,” Julian sneered, trying to maintain his defense. “Chloe was the junior analyst who processed the paperwork. If there was fraud, it was an internal operational error executed by junior staff.”
Chloe’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock and betrayal. “What?! Julian, you told me to execute those transfers! You promised me a junior partnership!”
“Do you have that authorization in writing, Chloe?” Julian asked her with a terrible, icy smirk.
I smiled softly at Julian. “She doesn't need it in writing, Julian. Because I have your recorded phone conversation with Eric from Friday morning at 10:15 a.m., where you explicitly instructed him on how to disguise the $120,000 wire transfer as an administrative fee.”
Julian’s smirk vanished instantly. His breath caught in his throat.
The two NYPD detectives stepped forward. “Julian Vance, stand up and place your hands behind your back.”
As the detectives pulled the managing partner out of his high-backed leather chair and slapped steel cuffs onto his wrists, the entire floor of analysts and senior partners gathered in the glass hallway, whispering and watching in complete shock.
Chloe was led out right behind him, sobbing hysterically into a tissue.

I stood in the center of the executive office, watching the man who had controlled my professional life for six years being marched toward the freight elevators in chains.
The corporate audit was officially complete.
