Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

Within twenty-four hours of Grant’s public arrest in David Brenner’s office, the story broke across every major financial and news network in the country. The headlines were sensational: "LOGISTICS TYCOON ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF HEIRESS WHO FAKED HER OWN FUNERAL."
Sitting in the private library of the Whitmore estate—the home Grant had thought he would inherit entirely—I watched the television screen in silence.
On screen, financial journalists were dissecting the corporate wreckage of Grant’s holdings. The moment the news of his indictment hit the stock market, the shares of his subsidiary companies plummeted by eighty-four percent. The board of directors had held an emergency midnight session, voting unanimously to strip Grant of all executive power, seize his stock options, and cooperate fully with the federal prosecutors.
Jenna entered the library carrying a tray of fresh mint tea and a stack of financial updates.
"The forensic team finished reviewing the offshore accounts in Nassau," Jenna said, placing a cup beside me. "Grant didn't just steal from your personal trust, Claire. He took out twenty-two million dollars in fraudulent commercial loans using Whitmore Logistics assets as unauthorized collateral."
"He was planning to leave the country," I remarked, taking a sip of the warm tea. "Once the funeral was over and the trust money hit his account, he was going to transfer everything to a non-extradition jurisdiction."
"And Tessa?" Jenna asked.
"Tessa’s attorney is currently begging the District Attorney for a plea bargain," I replied, opening a file folder. "She turned over Grant’s personal laptop—the one he kept hidden in her apartment. It contains every email, every encrypted chat, and every bank transfer instruction he ever sent over the past three years."
Just then, the library door opened, and David Brenner walked in, carrying a leather briefcase.
"Good evening, ladies," Brenner said, taking a seat in the armchair opposite me. "I just returned from a private conference with the Assistant United States Attorney. The federal government is stepping in."
I looked up, raising an eyebrow. "Federal charges?"
"Wire fraud, money laundering across international borders, and federal healthcare fraud," Brenner listed off with immense satisfaction. "Because Tessa was a registered nurse who used hospital resources to track your condition and access pharmaceutical databases, the federal government is treating this as a high-level criminal enterprise. Grant is looking at a minimum of thirty years without the possibility of parole."
"Has he posted bail?" Jenna asked.
Brenner chuckled coldly. "Bail was set at fifteen million dollars, cash only. But since every single one of his personal and corporate accounts was frozen under the emergency injunction we filed yesterday morning, he couldn't raise fifteen dollars, let alone fifteen million. He is currently sitting in a six-by-eight cell at the County Holding Facility."
I leaned back against the plush velvet cushions of the sofa, looking out the large arched windows toward the manicured gardens outside. The rain had finally stopped, replaced by a clear, cold evening sky filled with distant stars.
"He asked to see me, didn't he?" I asked quietly.
Brenner paused, looking at me carefully. "His attorney called my office three times today. Grant claims he has information regarding former board members who assisted him in the asset diversion. He says he will only surrender the access keys to the remaining offshore reserves if he can speak to you in person."
Jenna frowned, turning to me instantly. "Don't go, Claire. It's a trap. He just wants one last chance to manipulate you or satisfy his ego."

I looked down at my hands. The skin was healthy, the blood flowing warm through my veins. The woman Grant had tried to kill was gone, replaced by someone who had survived her own death and reclaimed her power.
"I'm going, Jenna," I said softly. "Not because he has anything I need. But because I want him to look at me one last time—in a cage."
