Chapter 8 - The Web Collapses

By midnight, the house had become a crime scene commander's post.
State investigators moved through every room, taking photographs, collecting evidence, and cataloging financial records. Sheriff Arlen was seen being escorted from his official vehicle in handcuffs, stripped of his badge by state agents for obstruction of justice and official corruption.
Vanessa Cole was arrested two hours later at the Grand Bohemian Hotel.
She broke down within twenty minutes of interrogation, signing a forty-page confession detailing the entire plot—the insurance fraud, the offshore accounts, and how Ethan had planned the "accidental" drowning at the cabin to clear his debts and start a new life with her.
I sat in the kitchen, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, holding a warm mug of tea that state agents had brought me.
Miller stepped into the room, pulling off his wet coat and sitting down across from me at the table.
"Ethan is in the intensive care unit at the university hospital," Miller reported quietly. "Fractured skull, broken femur, and severe internal bleeding. He's under twenty-four-hour armed guard."
I looked down at my tea, watching the steam rise into the quiet air. "Will he stand trial?"
"The doctors say he'll survive," Miller said. "And the Attorney General’s office is prosecuting this as a capital murder case. With Vanessa's confession, the audio recording, and the physical evidence from the cabin, he's going to spend the rest of his life on death row, or face lethal injection."
I let out a slow, deep breath. The weight that had been crushing my chest for four days didn't disappear—it would never disappear—but the suffocating fog of doubt and confusion was finally gone.
"What about you, Thomas?" I asked, calling him by his first name for the first time. "What happens to your daughter?"
Miller looked out the window at the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles. "The state attorney general reviewed my daughter's medical malpractice file tonight. They're re-opening the civil case against Ethan's estate and the hospital. Her care facility costs will be covered for the rest of her life."

He looked back at me, a soft, weary smile touching his gray eyes. "We did it, Claire. We brought them down."
"No," I said, reaching across the table to lay my hand over his broad, worn knuckles. "You saved me from going insane. You gave Owen his voice back."
