Chapter 6 - The Blitz

The laughter in the room died instantly.
Julian frowned, looking around at the high oak bookshelves. "What the hell are you talking about, Clara? There are no cameras in this room. We swept the house three months ago with an RF detector."
"You used an analog RF detector you bought on Amazon for two hundred dollars, Julian," I said, my voice dropping into a low, icy register that made Harold Vance freeze in his chair. "You swept for wireless frequencies. You didn't sweep for hardwired fiber-optic lines running directly into the building's structural conduit."
Vanessa's smirk wavered for half a second, her green eyes narrowing as she stared at me. "You're bluffing. You signed the agreement. The notary seal is executed. The transfer is legally binding under New York State corporate law."
"The transfer is legally executed," I agreed, taking a step backward toward the tall bay windows behind me. "Which means that Harold Vance just notarized a fraudulent document signed under physical duress, financial extortion, and unlawful confinement."
"You weren't under duress!" Beatrice snapped, standing up so fast her tea saucer clattered onto the hardwood floor and shattered into three pieces. "You signed it voluntarily! We have witnesses!"
"You mean yourself and your son's mistress?" I asked softly.
Before Beatrice could answer, the floor beneath our feet began to vibrate.
It wasn't a rumble. It was a rhythmic, heavy thumping—the sound of three heavy-duty Ford F-350 vehicles coming up the long cobblestone driveway at fifty miles an hour.
Julian rushed to the bay window, pulling back the heavy velvet curtains.
His face drained of every drop of color in less than three seconds.
"Julian?" Vanessa's voice lost its smooth composure, turning sharp, thin, and panicked. "Julian, what is it?"
"It's... it's the federal government," Julian whispered, his lips trembling as he backed away from the glass.
Outside on the grand lawn, three black SUVs bearing the gold seals of the United States Marshal Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation slid to a stop, tearing up the manicured grass.
Sixteen armed federal agents in tactical gear, carrying short-barreled carbines, spilled out of the vehicles and fanned out across the front porch in a synchronized, lethal diamond formation.
Behind them came a silver Mercedes sedan.
The driver's door opened, and a tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored navy suit stepped out onto the driveway.
Marcus Sterling.
Vanessa stared through the window, her breath catching in her throat as if she had just seen a ghost walk out of a grave.
"Marcus..." she gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "No... no, he's in London... he doesn't have voting control..."
"He doesn't have voting control of Sterling Maritime, Vanessa," I said, leaning my back against the window frame and folding my arms over my chest. "But he does have full authority as an informant for the Southern District of New York's Financial Crimes Task Force."
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The heavy oak front door of the estate groaned under the impact of a steel battering ram.
"FEDERAL AGENTS WITH A WARRANT!" a voice bellowed through the foyer, echoing up the grand staircase. "DROP TO THE GROUND! DO NOT MOVE!"
Julian panicked. He turned toward the library's rear servant entrance, sprinting toward the hallway that led to the garage.
He didn't make it three steps.
The heavy double doors of the library were kicked open with explosive force, slamming back against the oak walls.
Four federal agents flooded into the room, their weapons raised, red laser sights painting dots across Julian's chest, Harold Vance's forehead, and Vanessa's white tweed suit.
"GET DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!" the lead agent screamed. "HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM! DOWN ON THE FLOOR!"
Harold Vance immediately dropped his briefcase, fell onto his knees, and put his hands behind his head, sobbing hysterically. "I'm just the notary! I didn't know! I didn't know they beat her! I swear to God I didn't know!"
Julian froze, staring down the barrel of a suppressor-equipped M4 carbine three feet from his nose. His knees buckled, and he sank onto the carpet, shaking so hard his teeth rattled together.
"Clara!" Julian wailed, looking toward me with wide, terrified eyes. "Clara, tell them! Tell them it's a mistake! I'm your husband! I love you!"
I didn't answer him. I didn't even look at him.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Lin walked through the shattered library doors, holding a thick red folder, flanked by Marcus Sterling and two forensic investigators carrying hard-shell electronic evidence cases.
Sarah stopped in the center of the room, looking around at the shattered tea saucer, the scotch decanter, and the notary stamp sitting on my father's desk.
"Vanessa Sterling," Sarah said, her tone as dry and emotionless as a tax form. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bank fraud, interstate extortion, and violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."
Vanessa stood frozen behind the desk. Her face was chalk-white, her breath coming in short, rapid gasps. She slowly raised her eyes to look at her uncle, who was standing beside Sarah Lin with his hands rested comfortably in his suit pockets.
"Uncle Marcus..." Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking. "How... how could you do this to your own family?"
Marcus Sterling looked at her with a quiet, devastating pity.
"You took my company three years ago using forged proxy votes, Vanessa," Marcus said softly. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice when you tried the exact same trick on Arthur Vance's daughter?"
Sarah Lin turned toward the two tactical agents standing behind Julian.
"Take Julian Ross into custody for Class A felony domestic assault, aggravated extortion, and corporate fraud," Sarah ordered. "And take Beatrice Ross into custody as an accessory to felony assault and witness intimidation."
"What?!" Beatrice screamed, her voice reaching a shrill, hysterical pitch as an agent pulled her arms behind her back and snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You can't arrest me! I'm sixty-five years old! I'm a member of the Country Club! Clara, you vicious little bitch, tell them to stop!"
As the agents hauled Beatrice and Julian out toward the hallway, Sarah Lin walked over to the walnut desk, picked up the notarized transfer agreement, and slipped it into a clear plastic evidence bag.
She looked at me, her sharp eyes taking in the pale foundation covering my left cheekbone and the tight way I was holding my ribs.
"Are you ready for the doctor, Clara?" Sarah asked gently.
May you like
I pulled my father's silver locket off the desk and placed it securely back into my pocket.
"Not yet, Sarah," I said smoothly. "I want to watch Vanessa get loaded into the van."
