Chapter 10 - The Horizon

That evening, I returned to Sterling Manor—or rather, what was now simply known as the Sterling Estate.
The house had been entirely transformed over the past six months. The cold, austere luxury that Julian had preferred was gone, replaced by warm light, comfortable furniture, and rooms filled with books, art, and flowers. The high-security gates out front were kept open during the day, welcoming staff, researchers, and legal teams working on active recovery cases.
I walked out onto the rear terrace carrying a warm cup of tea, looking down at the quiet, dark waters of the river flowing steadily past the property.
Eleanor stepped out onto the stone patio, joining me by the wrought-iron railing. She handed me a thin paper file.
"The final audit for the recovery fund was completed an hour ago," Eleanor said softly, leaning her arms on the railing. "Every single creditor from your father's original trust has been paid back in full, with interest. The remaining forty million dollars has been legally transferred into the permanent endowment for the Recovery Center."
"Thank you, Eleanor," I said, accepting the file and placing it on the small table beside us. "For everything. I couldn't have done any of this without you."
"You did the work, Genevieve," Eleanor said, looking at me with a proud, warm smile. "I just drove the car and filed the papers. You were the one who had the courage to walk through the fire and come out on the other side whole."
We stood in comfortable silence for a long while, watching the city lights blink on one by one across the dark expanse of the skyline. In the distance, the bright red safety lights atop the new construction crane at the Recovery Center glowed like a beacon in the night sky.
My phone chimed softly on the table.
I picked it up and glanced at the screen. It was a notification from the State Department of Corrections automated legal database—a routine system update that I had kept active on my personal account.
I opened the notification.
It contained a brief, administrative line update regarding Inmate #849202—Julian Vance Sterling.
STATUS: TRANSFERRED TO FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION, MEDIUM SECURITY. NEXT PAROLE ELIGIBILITY REVIEW: OCTOBER 2038.
I looked at the text for a second, then quietly closed the app.
I didn't feel a surge of triumph, nor did I feel a pang of lingering sadness. The name Julian Sterling no longer carried any weight or power in my life. It had been reduced to what it truly was—a closed case file stored away in an archive, a finished chapter in a much larger, grander story.
I slipped the phone back into my pocket and turned to face the warm, glowing light streaming through the French doors of my home.
Inside, my team was waiting—a group of brilliant young accountants, passionate lawyers, and dedicated advocates ready to begin work on our next major case tomorrow morning. There were still balance sheets to audit, stolen assets to recover, and innocent people waiting for someone to help them find the truth.
I took a deep breath of the cold evening air, feeling the steady, unbroken rhythm of my heart.

The gates had opened at dawn six months ago, but my life was only just beginning.
I turned my back on the dark river, stepped through the open doors, and walked into the light.
