Chapter 2 - The Mask of Devotion

"Claire?"

Ethan’s voice called out from the foyer, bright and resonant. The sound of a key ring clinking against the wooden console table was followed by his swift, measured footsteps approaching the kitchen.

Rosa reacted instinctively. With a speed born of pure terror, she swept the dark-red bundles, the black thread, and the parchment back into the plastic grocery bag, shoving it deep into the bottom of her rolling cleaning bin, covering it with dirty microfiber towels.

I stood paralyzed beside the counter, my face drained of blood, my cold hands clutching the edge of the marble so hard my knuckles clicked.

Ethan stepped into the kitchen.

He looked immaculate, as he always did. At thirty-four, Ethan was a handsome man—tall, with sharp jawlines, warm hazel eyes, and a broad, inviting smile. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his silk tie loosened just a fraction at the collar. In his right hand, he held a bouquet of fresh yellow freesias.

He stopped dead in his tracks the moment his eyes landed on me.

"Claire?" His smile vanished, replaced instantly by an expression of deep, affectionate concern. He dropped his briefcase onto a chair and hurried toward me. "Honey, what are you doing home? It’s barely noon! Are you feeling sick again?"

He reached out to touch my cheek.

Every nerve in my body screamed at me to jump back, to scream, to hit him. But a terrifying, instinctual survival mechanism took over. I forced my muscles to remain still, allowing his warm fingers to brush against my ice-cold skin.

"I... I got dizzy at the office," I stammered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to control it. "My supervisor sent me home."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly—a micro-expression of intense calculation that vanished as quickly as it appeared. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me tight against his chest. His suit smelled of expensive cologne, fresh rain, and a faint, bitter undertone that I had never noticed before—a dry, metallic scent like old pennies and dried lavender.

"Oh, sweetheart," he murmured into my hair, rubbing my back with gentle, rhythmic strokes. "I told you that job is killing you. You’re pushing yourself too hard. I’m so glad you came home to rest."

Over his shoulder, my eyes locked with Rosa’s. She was standing near the back door, her head bowed, her body rigid as she held her mop handle.

Ethan released me, turning his gaze toward Rosa. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp efficiency.

"Rosa," Ethan said, his voice flat and devoid of the affection he had just shown me. "I thought you usually finished the upstairs by eleven."

"I was just wiping down the kitchen counters, Mr. Vance," Rosa murmured, her accent thick with forced humility. "I am almost finished."

"Right," Ethan said, checking his silver wristwatch. "Well, my wife is unwell today. I’d prefer it if you wrapped up quickly and left early. We need quiet."

"Of course, sir," Rosa said. She gathered her cart, avoiding all eye contact with Ethan. As she pushed the cart past me toward the side door, her hand briefly brushed against mine. She slipped something small and hard into my palm.

The brass key.

I swept my fingers closed around it, slipping it into the pocket of my cardigan just as Ethan turned back around, holding up the yellow freesias.

"Look what I picked up for you on the way from my meeting," he said, stepping toward the sink to cut the stems with a chef's knife. "Yellow freesias. Your favorite. I’ll trim them and put them in the vase on your nightstand."

I watched him slice the green stems with smooth, practiced motions. The blade made a sharp, wet crunch against the cutting board.

Exposure increment: Week 12. Target date for full systemic surrender: November 14th.

The words written in his precise cursive burned behind my eyelids. Today was October 22nd.

I had three weeks.

"Thank you, Ethan," I whispered, forcing a faint, grateful smile onto my pale lips. "You always think of everything."

He looked up, smiling warmly at me, his hazel eyes shining with what looked like pure devotion. "I just want to take care of you, Claire. That’s all I’ve ever wanted."
