Chapter 6 - The Federal Intervention

Before Daniel could take another step toward me, two tall men in dark suits stepped out from the side aisle, cutting off his path entirely.
Special Agent Marcus Thorne pulled a leather badge holder from his coat, displaying the gold shield of the FBI. "Daniel Whitmore?"
Daniel blinked, stumbling backward against the edge of a banquet table, knocking over a glass of red wine that spilled across the crisp white tablecloth like a stain of blood. "Who are you? This is a private family foundation gala! Get out of here!"
"I am Special Agent Thorne with the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Thorne announced in a deep, carrying voice. "And this is Senior Assistant District Attorney Arthur Vance."
Vance stepped forward, pulling a folded paper from his pocket. "Daniel Whitmore, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, bank fraud, grand larceny, and criminal conspiracy to commit corporate asset theft."
"What?!" Daniel shrieked, his voice escalating into a pathetic, high-pitched register. "This is absurd! You can't arrest me based on an AV glitch! I am the CEO of Whitmore Development!"
"You were the CEO," Vance corrected smoothly. "As of twenty minutes ago, the board of directors convened an emergency teleconference based on forensic financial evidence provided to the United States Attorney's Office. Your executive powers have been suspended."
Agent Thorne grabbed Daniel’s arm, pulling his hands behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs snapping around Daniel’s wrists echoed across the front rows of the ballroom.
"Evelyn!" Daniel screamed, thrashing against Thorne’s grip as the agents forced his hands down. "Evelyn, tell them! Tell them this is a mistake! I did it for us! I did it to save the family company!"
"You did it to cover eleven point four million dollars you stole for your penthouse and your mistress, Daniel," I said, looking down at him with a coldness that made him freeze. "And you did it because you thought I was too weak to stop you."
"Wait!" Daniel gasped, his eyes darting wildly around the room until they landed on Table 12. "Caroline! Caroline, tell them! Call our lawyers! Use the Belladonna legal team!"
At the mention of Belladonna, Caroline Whitmore stood up abruptly from her chair at Table 12. Her face was dark with fury as she glared at her brother. She smoothed her green gown and immediately began moving swiftly toward the rear service exit of the ballroom.
"Leaving so soon, Miss Whitmore?" Vance’s voice cut through the room like a blade.
Two plainclothes FBI agents stepped directly into the service doorway, blocking Caroline’s escape.
Caroline stopped, her chest heaving, but she quickly pulled her mask of aristocratic composure back over her face. "I am a guest at this gala. I have no involvement in my brother’s foolish corporate misdeeds."
"Is that so?" Vance walked slowly over to her, pulling a second document from his jacket. "Because three hours ago, you provided Mrs. Whitmore with a digital drive containing the complete internal ledgers of Belladonna AG—an offshore entity in Zurich that you personally control."
Caroline’s eyes snapped toward me, burning with a terrifying, venomous hatred. "You traitorous little bitch," she spat under her breath. "You brought the federal government into our family?"
"You brought yourself into my marriage, Caroline," I replied, walking over to stand beside Vance. "You thought you could use Daniel’s greed to steal the historic land trust our father built. You thought you were the mastermind."
"Caroline Elizabeth Whitmore," Agent Thorne’s partner announced, pulling Caroline’s hands behind her back and snapping a second pair of handcuffs onto her wrists. "You are under arrest for federal money laundering, tax evasion, and felony conspiracy."
The ballroom went wild. Camera flashes erupted in a blinding storm as press photographers scrambled over chairs to capture the historic sight of both Whitmore heirs being led away in handcuffs from their own charitable gala.
Vanessa Croft was currently being questioned near the stairs by two female NYPD officers, sobbing hysterically as she realized her dream of luxury penthouses and high-society status had ended in a public record of criminal fraud.
As the agents began guiding Daniel toward the grand double doors, he turned his head back toward me one last time. His face was twisted in desperation, tears smearing the sweat on his cheeks.
"Evelyn!" he pleaded, his voice cracking over the noise of the crowd. "Please! We can fix this! I love you! You're my wife!"

I stood straight in the center of the Grand Ballroom, bathed in the soft glow of the crystal chandeliers, wearing my South Sea pearls and the heavy velvet dress of the Whitmore trustee.
I didn't answer him. I simply watched as the heavy doors closed behind him, cutting off his voice forever.
