Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION CELL

The visitor’s room at the county correctional facility smelled of industrial bleach and stale coffee. Thick glass separated the cubicles, and the low hum of fluorescent lights created a depressing, sterile atmosphere.

Grant sat on the other side of the partition, wearing a orange jumpsuit that looked several sizes too large for his once-athletic frame. His hair was messy, dark circles carved deep under his eyes, and his hands were handcuffed to a metal ring attached to the counter.

When I sat down on the stool across from him, he looked up, a mixture of rage, desperation, and shame flashing across his face.

He grabbed the telephone receiver mounted on his side of the glass. I picked up mine.

“Evelyn,” Grant’s voice came through the speaker, scratchy and desperate. “You have to get me out of here. Your mother can pull the charges! Talk to Arthur! Tell him it was a misunderstanding!”

“It wasn't a misunderstanding, Grant,” I said, my voice perfectly level through the plastic earpiece. “It was a calculated crime. And you got caught.”

“I did it for us!” Grant pleaded, pressing his forehead against the glass. “I was trying to build something massive! I was tired of being known as ‘Eleanor Vance’s son-in-law’ or the guy living off your family’s trust fund! I wanted my own empire!”

“You wanted an empire built on theft, deceit, and betrayal,” I replied. “You brought a woman into my baby shower to destroy my dignity. You tried to exploit a clause in our prenup to steal my grandfather’s money.”

Grant’s expression darkened, his desperation turning back into bitter anger. “You think you’re so innocent, don’t you? Sitting there looking down on me! You knew about Paige for weeks! You let her walk into that room! You humiliated me in front of Arthur, in front of the whole city!”

“You humiliated yourself the moment you thought I was too stupid to read a document,” I said smoothly. “You thought my pregnancy made me vulnerable. You thought emotional distress would make me weak. You forgot who raised me.”

Grant let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Your mother. The great Eleanor Vance. She turned you into a monster just like her.”

“She turned me into a woman who doesn’t allow parasitic men to drain her life,” I corrected him. “Paige signed a full confession this afternoon, Grant. She handed over every text message, every voice note, and every bank record showing how you instructed her to leak files from Mercer Holdings.”

Grant froze, the color draining from his face once again. “Paige… she swore she deleted those messages.”

“She lied to you,” I said, feeling a cold sense of justice settle in my chest. “Just like you lied to her. Just like you lied to me. The district attorney is adding three counts of felony conspiracy to your indictment this afternoon. Bail has been revoked.”

Grant pressed his hands against the glass, his eyes wide with genuine horror as reality finally smashed through his denial. “Evelyn… please. Think of our daughter! Do you want her father to be a convicted felon?”

I touched my bump gently, looking at him with absolute clarity.

“My daughter will know that her mother stood up for herself,” I said quietly. “She will grow up knowing that power isn’t about screaming or threatening people—it’s about foresight, patience, and absolute self-respect. And as far as legal records are concerned, Grant, you will have no parental rights. The court papers for total termination of custody were filed an hour ago based on your criminal indictments.”

“You can’t take my daughter away from me!” Grant screamed, banging his hand against the counter. A correctional officer immediately stepped up behind him, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder.

“I’m not taking her away from you, Grant,” I said, slowly lowering the phone receiver. “You gave her up the moment you decided she was just a bargaining chip in your plan.”

I stood up, placed the receiver back onto its hook, and turned my back on him. Behind the glass, Grant was shouting my name, his voice muffled, then silenced completely as the door behind him clicked shut.
