Chapter 5 - The Escalation

The storm broke at three o'clock that afternoon.
I was sitting on Marcus’s couch, drinking warm chamomile tea, while Marcus worked on his laptop at the kitchen counter. My old phone was off, but Marcus’s secondary work phone suddenly started vibrating against the wood.
Marcus looked at the caller ID. "It's an unknown landline from the county court area."
"Answer it on speaker," I said.
Marcus tapped the screen and set the phone between us. "Hello?"
"Marcus! You need to tell your sister to drop this insane lawsuit right now!"
It was Brenda. Her voice was hysterical, trembling with high-pitched rage and sobbing breaths.
"Two police officers just showed up at Mark’s office!" Brenda shrieked over the line. "They served him with a restraining order in front of his boss! They escorted him off the premises like a common criminal! His career is over! Do you hear me? His career is completely ruined!"
"Good," Marcus said coldly, leaning over the phone. "He should have thought about his career before he put his hands on my sister and shaved her head."
"It was Chloe’s idea!" Brenda blurted out, her maternal instincts instantly driving her to throw her own daughter under the bus to save her son. "Mark didn't want to do it! Chloe convinced him that they needed the money for the investment debts! Mark was just trying to protect his sister from loan sharks! You have to tell the police that Mark was forced into it!"
I leaned forward toward the microphone, my voice calm, icy, and measured.
"Hello, Brenda."
The line went dead silent for two seconds.
"Elena?" Brenda’s voice shifted instantly into a sickeningly sweet, pleading tone. "Elena, sweetie! Thank God you're there! Please, you have to stop this madness! Mark loves you! He’s the father of your baby! How can you do this to your own family? Think of how this will look in the newspapers! Think of Noah's reputation when he grows up!"
"Noah's reputation will be just fine, Brenda," I said. "Because he will grow up knowing his mother didn't let a family of grifters use him as a prop for a fraud scheme."
"You cruel, ungrateful little bitch!" Brenda screamed, dropping the sweet facade in an instant. "We took you in! We treated you like a daughter! You think you can just walk away with my grandson and ruin my children? We will fight you with every dollar we have left! We will tell the judge you're insane! We have texts showing you've been taking anti-anxiety medication during your pregnancy!"
"Those medications were prescribed by my obstetrician after Mark cleared out our joint savings account without my knowledge, Brenda," I replied coldly. "And my lawyer already has those medical records certified by the Chief of Staff at Memorial Hospital. Good luck with your defense."
Before she could scream another word, Marcus pressed the red button, cutting the line. He immediately accessed the settings and blocked the number.
"Well," Marcus said, rubbing the back of his neck. "At least we know Sarah’s restraining order was served."
Ten minutes later, a loud knock echoed from the front door of the apartment.
Marcus’s entire body went tense. He stood up, motioned for me to stay in the living room, and walked quietly toward the hallway, pulling a heavy steel wrench from his belt sheath.
"Who is it?" Marcus demanded through the thick wood.
"Process server for Sarah Lin’s office," a professional voice answered from the hallway. "I have a confirmation package for Mrs. Vance."
Marcus checked the optical peep-hole, verified the man’s identification badge, and unlatched the deadbolts. The process server handed over a thick manila envelope stamped with red ink: FILED - SUPERIOR COURT OF COOK COUNTY.
I opened the envelope at the kitchen table.
Inside were the official, court-stamped copies of my divorce petition, the temporary order of protection, and an emergency order freezing all bank accounts associated with Mark Vance, Chloe Vance, and Apex Media & Talent Management LLC.
Attached to the back of the stack was a personal note from Sarah Lin:
Elena, The court granted every emergency petition. Mark’s personal and corporate accounts are frozen. The District Attorney has formally issued arrest warrants for Mark and Chloe Vance for Attempted Larceny and Fraud. Detectives are currently en route to Chloe's residence. Stay inside. They are running out of corners to hide in.
I held the papers in my hand, reading the bold red stamp over and over again. FROZEN. FROZEN. FROZEN.
For three years, Mark had controlled every financial decision in our marriage. He had convinced me to merge our bank accounts, to place my car title in his name, to hand over my yearly corporate bonuses to his 'wealth management' strategies. He had made me feel small, dependent, and perpetually in debt to his superior business acumen.
Now, with a single stroke of a judge's pen, his illusion of control had completely evaporated. He was broke, locked out of his own assets, facing criminal arrest, and barred from approaching the woman he had spent years manipulating.
Suddenly, a loud commotion erupted from the street three floors below the apartment window.
I stood up, walked to the glass, and pushed the thin lace curtains aside.
parked right across the street in a fire lane was Mark’s red sports car.
Mark was standing on the pavement, looking up at the third-floor windows. His hair was disheveled, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his face pale and contorted with desperation. Standing beside his car, trying frantically to pull him back into the driver's seat, was Chloe, who was sobbing hysterically while looking over her shoulder at the corner intersection.

Mark raised his hands to his mouth, shaping them into a megaphone, and began to scream at the top of his lungs toward Marcus’s window.
"ELENA! COME DOWN HERE! ELENA, YOU'RE RUINING EVERYTHING! TALK TO ME!"
