Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of Rebirth

Six months after the incident at the mountain estate, the autumn leaves were turning bright crimson across the North Georgia mountains.

I returned to the estate—not as a guest, but as its new owner.

After the retreat company went into bankruptcy restructuring in August, I purchased the sixty-acre mountain property through my real estate holding firm for three point two million dollars—a fraction of its original market value.

I stood on the timber decking near the lower pool.

The pool had been completely redesigned. The cheap above-ground steel walls had been torn down and replaced by an infinity-edge stone basin filled with warm, bubbling spring water, fed by a natural rock waterfall that cascaded down from the cliff above.

Beside me stood Sarah Vance, carrying a bottle of champagne and two crystal glasses.

“The final papers were recorded in Gilmer County this morning, Maddie,” Sarah said, pouring two glasses and handing one to me. “The property is officially yours.”

I took the glass, feeling the sun warm against my face. The crisp mountain air carried the scent of pine and fresh cedar, but there was no bite to it now—only a deep, peaceful quiet.

“How are the quarterly numbers looking for Lawson Logistics?” I asked, taking a slow sip.

“Revenue is up twenty-four percent since we streamlined executive operations,” Sarah smiled. “The new distribution center in Savannah came online three weeks ahead of schedule. We’ve completely erased the losses from the Miller audit.”

I looked out over the valley, watching the red and gold leaves drift down through the clear autumn air.

In six months, I had liquidated a toxic marriage, eliminated four parasitic relatives from my corporate structure, recovered three hundred thousand dollars of stolen capital, and built my firm into a twenty-million-dollar regional power.

Most importantly, I had shed the pathetic, desperate need to be accepted by people who were beneath my character.

My phone chimed in my pocket.

It was an automated notification from the Georgia Department of Corrections offender portal, updating the status of Inmate #0001489201—Bradley Miller.

Current Location: Riverbend Correctional Facility. Parole Eligibility Date: November 2028.

I closed the notification without reading the attached details, deleted the application from my phone, and dropped the device onto the timber table behind me.

“Maddie,” Sarah asked, looking at me with genuine curiosity. “Do you ever regret moving that fast that night? The fifteen minutes after he pushed you?”

I turned my head and looked down at the warm, clear water of the new pool, cascading gently over the dark granite rocks.

“I spent four years waiting for those people to value me, Sarah,” I said softly. “That freezing water didn't ruin my life. It woke me up.”
