Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

Margaret stared at the glowing blue screen.

She was an old-money matriarch who had spent forty years managing her late husband’s estate. She recognized a Swiss wire transfer receipt instantly.

She saw the total: $38,450,000.00. She saw the destination account: Zurich Private Wealth Management. She saw the primary authorized account holder: Daniel Castellano. And she saw the secondary beneficiary listed beneath his name: Jessica Vance.

Margaret’s face didn't just lose color. It collapsed.

The arrogant, aristocratic posture she had maintained her entire life crumpled as if she had been hit by a freight train. She took a staggering step back, her hand flying to her throat, gasping for air.

"Daniel..." Margaret whispered, her voice shaking violently. "Daniel... what is this?"

"Mother, listen to me!" Daniel panicked, grabbing Margaret’s arms. "It's a mistake! She hacked my accounts! She altered the documents!"

"She didn't alter the master key code, Daniel!" Margaret shrieked, her voice turning into a high-pitched, desperate scream that made the hospital security guards start walking briskly toward us. "That's your father's private trust key! The key only you and I possess!"

She turned on Jessica like a rabid animal.

"You!" Margaret roared, lunging forward, snatching the dark blue wool scarf from Jessica’s neck with a violent, tearing motion. "You scheming little whore! You were stealing my family's money?!"

"Get off me, you crazy old woman!" Jessica screamed, shoving Margaret back onto the pavement. "Daniel promised me that money six months ago! He said you were a bitter, controlling hag who was going to drain the estate before he ever saw a dime!"

"What?!" Margaret gasped, clutching her chest, falling onto her knees on the cold concrete.

"Jessica, shut up!" Daniel yelled, turning around in a frenzy, looking like a cornered beast as his entire carefully constructed world shattered into millions of jagged pieces right in front of him.

"It's over, Daniel," I said softly.

The time on my phone clicked to 1:59 p.m.

I didn't press the cancel button.

I watched the seconds count down.

00:00:03... 00:00:02... 00:00:01... 00:00:00.

Status: Sent.

The complete evidentiary package—the falsified medical reports from Dr. Harrison, the raw ultrasound telemetry proving my baby was healthy, the Panama shell company filings, the tax fraud records, the Zurich wire transfers, and the audio recording of the assault—was instantly delivered to the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force, the managing board of Castellano & Associates, and the state medical board.

At that exact second, three black unmarked sedans pulled violently into the hospital drop-off zone, tires screeching against the asphalt, blocking Daniel’s SUV from the front and back.

Six federal agents in dark suits stepped out of the sedans, their badges glinting in the sunlight.

Leading them was a tall, gray-haired man with hard, iron-gray eyes—Marcus Vance.

"Daniel Castellano!" Marcus’s voice boomed across the drop-off zone. "Federal agents! Stay where you are!"

Daniel spun around, his eyes wide with horror as he realized the black sedans hadn't come for me.

They had come for him.

"No... no!" Daniel stammered, stepping back toward the glass doors. "There's been a mistake! My family owns this hospital! My uncle is the district judge!"

"Your uncle resigned twenty minutes ago after reviewing your wire logs, Daniel," Marcus Vance said coldly, pulling a heavy pair of steel handcuffs from his belt as he stepped up to Daniel. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, medical conspiracy, and felony domestic assault."

"Assault?!" Daniel yelled as two agents grabbed his arms, forcing him face-down onto the hood of his own luxury SUV. "I didn't touch her! She slipped!"

"We have the intake logs from Nurse Clara, Daniel," Marcus said, snapping the steel cuffs onto Daniel’s wrists with a loud, metallic CLICK. "And we have Dr. Harrison in custody downstairs right now. He’s already signing a full confession to save his own skin."

"Harrison..." Daniel whimpered, his face pressed against the cold metal of the SUV hood, his expensive charcoal suit getting smeared with dirt and engine oil.

Beside him, two female agents stepped up to Jessica, clicking handcuffs around her manicured wrists while she sobbed hysterically, dropping her designer handbag into the gutter.

Margaret remained on her knees on the cold sidewalk, sobbing hysterically, looking up at me with eyes full of utter, pathetic desperation.

"Emily..." Margaret wept, reaching out a trembling, liver-spotted hand toward my boots. "Emily, please... talk to them! Tell them it was a family dispute! Save our family name! Don't let them ruin us!"

I looked down at the woman who had stood over me while I bled on her hardwood floor, who had pulled my hair, who had called me trash, who had helped her son try to steal my child.

May you like

I took one step back, pulling the hem of my coat out of her reach.

"You aren't my family, Margaret," I said, my voice as clear and cold as winter ice. "And the Castellano name was ruined the day you traded your humanity for money."
