Chapter 8 - The Trust Restructure

Three months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured green lawns of the Montgomery Private Estate in Pasadena—a sprawling, twenty-acre historic property surrounded by high stone walls, ancient oak trees, and private security checkpoints.
I sat on the shaded veranda, wearing a comfortable white linen dress.
My twin daughters, Lily and Maya, were sleeping peacefully in a double mahogany crib beside my chair, wrapped in soft, organic cotton blankets. They were three weeks old, healthy, thriving, and surrounded by absolute love.
Jonathan Vance sat across from me, sipping ice tea, going through a stack of legal documents that required my final signature.
“The bankruptcy proceedings for Sterling Global Capital were completed yesterday, Sarah,” Jonathan reported smoothly. “All corporate assets have been absorbed into The Montgomery Heritage Land Trust. The Sterling name has been legally expunged from every commercial building in Southern California.”
“And Eleanor’s penthouse?” I asked gently, holding a warm cup of herbal tea.
“Auctioned off two weeks ago,” Jonathan replied with a subtle smile. “The proceeds were placed directly into a trust fund set up exclusively for Lily and Maya’s college education.”
I looked over at my sleeping daughters, tracing my fingers gently over Lily’s soft, dark curls.
“And Julian’s sentencing?”
Jonathan pulled a final document from his leather case.
“Julian Sterling pled guilty to all counts of felony assault, corporate fraud, and conspiracy. He was sentenced this morning to twenty-two years at Pelican Bay State Penitentiary. Eleanor received twelve years at the California Institution for Women.”
Jonathan leaned back in his chair, looking at me with deep, grandfatherly pride.

“They will never touch your life again, Sarah. They will never step foot on your land again. And they will never know the sweet sound of your daughters’ voices.”
I closed my eyes, taking a long, deep breath of the fresh summer air. The phantom pain of the vinyl restraint belt that had haunted my sleep for months finally vanished completely from my mind.
