Chapter 7 - The Collapse

The sound of police sirens cut through the quiet night of Back Bay, growing louder until the heavy red and blue strobes bathed the mahogany foyer in a violent, pulsing light.
Mark panicked. The cool, impenetrable hedge-fund CEO vanished, replaced by a desperate, trapped animal. He lunged toward the side door leading to the garden alleyway, but I had already locked it from the outside twenty minutes prior.
"Maya! Open the fucking door!" he screamed, slamming his shoulder against the heavy oak paneling.
"I don't have the key, Mark," I said, watching him from the base of the stairs. "Just like you don't have a home anymore."
The front door burst open. Four armed federal agents from the FBI's Financial Crimes Task Force slammed into the foyer, weapons drawn, their boots heavy against the hardwood floor.
"FBI! Don't move! Hands where I can see them!"
Mark spun around, raising his hands trembling into the air. "Wait! Listen to me! This is a mistake! My wife—she’s the one who controls Apex Holdings! She’s the one you want!"
The lead agent, a stern woman in a dark tactical vest, stepped forward with a pair of handcuffs. "Mark Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and bank fraud under the federal RICO statute. You have the right to remain silent—"
"Look at her!" Mark shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at me as I stood calmly near the coat rack. "She’s the signatory! Check the files! She stole the money!"
The lead agent glanced at me, then back at Mark. "Mrs. Sterling provided state's evidence three hours ago, Mr. Sterling. Along with six years of unedited database logs showing you forged her signature using an IP address registered to your private laptop. Keep your mouth shut and step forward."
As the agents forced Mark to his knees and snapped the cold steel cuffs around his wrists, his eyes locked onto mine. There was no charm left, no calculated coldness—only pure, unadulterated venom.
"You took everything," he hissed through gritted teeth as they hauled him to his feet. "You took every dollar I built!"
"You didn't build anything, Mark," I said, stepping closer so only he could hear my voice over the rustle of police radios. "I built Sterling Capital. I wrote the code. I laid the strategy. I gave you a life. You were just the salesman. And you just got canceled."
They dragged him out into the freezing rain, forcing his head down as they shoved him into the back of an unmarked black sedan. I stood on the top step of the brownstone, watching the car pull away, its red taillights disappearing into the Boston blizzard.
My phone chimed in my pocket. A message from Julian.
Victoria was just detained at Hanscom Airfield attempting to board a private flight to London. She had two million in undeclared bearer bonds in her carry-on.
I looked down at the screen, letting out a long, slow breath. The icy tightness that had gripped my chest since that moment in the Chicago hotel lobby finally began to thaw.
Victoria was in custody. Mark was in cuffs. The federal authorities had the complete, unedited ledger detailing every dark-money path they had built over the last four years.

But there was still one final debt left to settle.
I walked down the steps, pulled my coat tightly around my shoulders, and hailed a cab to Back Bay’s south district—to Chloe’s apartment.
