Chapter 8 - The Slip Knot

With one final, painful pull that tore a patch of skin from the base of her left thumb, Emma’s left hand came completely free from the jute binding behind the chair frame.
The sudden loss of tension on the left side caused the secondary knot behind the wooden splats to loosen instantly.
Emma didn't wait.
She brought her left hand around from behind her back, her fingers red, raw, and bleeding slightly near the wrist, and reached down beneath the draped hem of the tablecloth.
Caroline saw the movement first.
Her eyes followed Emma’s arm as it disappeared beneath the linen, and then her gaze caught the distinct, pale blue glow spilling out from under the table edge onto the dark oak floor.
Caroline’s face transformed instantly—the calm, managing authority melting away into a flash of sharp, predatory panic.
"What is that?" Caroline demanded, taking two fast steps toward Emma’s chair. "What do you have down there?!"
Emma reached the phone before Caroline could round the corner of the table.
Her raw fingers closed around the cold metal casing. She pulled the phone up out from under the table, holding the glowing screen high in her left hand while her right hand remained hooked through the loose loops of rope behind her back.
The red timer was sitting at 00:18:42.
"Give me that!" Caroline shouted, lunging forward with her hands outstretched, her pristine cream jumpsuit wrinkling as she reached across the corner of the sideboard.
Emma didn't pull the phone back. She didn't hide it behind her body.
Instead, she tapped the screen with her thumb, stopped the recording, and hit the high-volume playback button on the main file.
The high-quality microphone on the flagship device carried the recorded audio through the heavy air of the dining room with terrifying clarity.
“She’s not going anywhere until we’re finished.”
Daniel’s recorded voice echoed off the crystal chandelier, cold, flat, and absolute.
Then came Emma’s recorded question:
“Why did you take my phone, Daniel?”
Followed immediately by Daniel’s precise, unhesitating answer:
“Because you were going to make a scene.”
And then Caroline’s sharp, mocking laugh from ten minutes prior:
“We were trying to enjoy one nice anniversary dinner without everything becoming about your pregnancy...”
Daniel stood up so fast his chair fell backward, crashing against the hardwood floor with a sound like a gunshot.
"Emma, turn that off!" Daniel yelled, his face turning a deep, dangerous crimson as he reached across her shoulder to grab the device.
"Give me the phone, Emma!" Caroline shrieked, reaching from the other side, her manicured nails sweeping within inches of Emma’s face.
Neither of them touched it.
Before Daniel’s fingers could close around her wrist, a small, dark shape darted between the overturned chair and the sideboard.
Noah.
The nine-year-old boy leaped forward, his small hands snatching the glowing phone directly out of Emma’s raised left hand before his mother or uncle could intercept it.
"Noah!" Caroline screamed, turning on her son with wild, wide eyes. "Noah, give that to me right now! Give it to Mother!"
Noah didn't answer. He turned on his heel and sprinted across the dining room, his rubber-soled sneakers gripping the polished wood floor as he backed straight toward the locked service doors at the end of the hall.
He clutched the glowing phone against the front of his small blazer with both hands, his chest heaving, his pale face set in a look of absolute, unyielding defiance that no one in the Ventresca family had ever seen on a child.
"Noah, I am warning you!" Caroline shouted, taking three threatening steps toward him. "Hand that device to your uncle Daniel this instant!"
Noah looked at his mother. Then he looked at Emma, who was now standing up from the chair, the loosened loops of jute rope falling away from her waist and dropping onto the floor like dead snakes.
"No," Noah said. His voice was high, trembling with fear, but it carried across the quiet room like a bell.

"What did you say to me?!" Caroline gasped.
"You tied Aunt Emma up," Noah said, his small chin shaking as tears finally began to fill his eyes. "You tied her to a chair because she's having a baby. I recorded it."
