Chapter 5 - The NICU Ward

At 3:00 AM, despite Dr. Feld’s strict orders that she remain in bed, Mara insisted on being placed in a wheelchair.
A nurse pushed her down the long, quiet corridors of the hospital toward the third-floor Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The air here was warmer, smelled of antiseptic soap, and hummed with the constant, gentle beep of infant monitors.
They stopped before a double-glass incubator bay.
Inside the first incubator lay a tiny baby girl, her skin translucent and pink, a tiny blue tube resting beneath her nostrils. Beside her incubator sat a second, identical plastic box holding a slightly smaller boy.
Mara reached through the circular rubber portals of the incubator, her index finger touching the baby girl’s hand.
The infant’s tiny fingers—no larger than matchsticks—instantly curled around Mara’s nail.
A tear spilled down Mara’s cheek, landing on the sleeve of her yellow hospital gown.
"Her name is Clara," Mara whispered to the quiet room. "And his name is Leo."
"They're strong, Mrs. Ellison," the NICU nurse said softly from behind her. "Their oxygen saturation levels are up to ninety-eight percent. They're going to make it."
Mara held her daughter’s hand, feeling the delicate, incredibly fast pulse fluttering against her fingertip.
Grant abandoned them. He had looked at the monitor showing a blood pressure high enough to trigger a massive maternal stroke, looked at his unborn children, and walked out to catch a flight.
He had left them to die alone in the dark.
The grief that had been suffocating her since 7:18 PM melted away, replaced by an absolute, crystal-clear clarity.
She wasn't just a victim of a corporate embezzlement plot anymore. She was a mother protecting her children from a predator who happened to share their surname.

She pulled her hand back from the incubator, turned her wheelchair around, and looked up at the nurse.
"Get me a phone," Mara commanded. Her voice had lost its raspy weakness; it was sharp, precise, and absolute. "And call Julian Sterling. Tell him to bring his legal team to my room immediately."
