Chapter 4 - The Empty Bed

At 2:15 PM, the heavy double doors of the East Wing floor at St. Jude Memorial Hospital burst open with a loud, aggressive slam.

Flynn Vance strode down the hallway, his charcoal wool coat flying behind him like the wings of a vulture, his face red and slick with sweat despite the cool indoor air.

Directly behind him were Arthur and Fiona.

Arthur looked ten years older than he had seventy-two hours ago. His silk tie was lopsided at his throat, his eyes bloodshot, his fingers clutching a crumpled stack of legal printouts that had been faxed to his personal office less than an hour ago. Fiona was practically trotting to keep up with them, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup, her expensive leather handbag swinging wildly from her elbow.

"Where is she?" Flynn roared as he reached the nurses' station, slamming his open palm down against the wooden counter so hard a box of latex gloves bounced onto the floor. "Where is my wife?"

Two young administrative assistants backed away from the desk in terror.

Nurse Evelyn stepped out from the medication prep room, holding a clipboard calmly against her apron. She looked at Flynn with a cool, professional detachment that seemed to infuriate him even further.

"Mr. Vance," Evelyn said flatly. "Please lower your voice. This is a recovery floor."

"Don't tell me to lower my voice!" Flynn snarled, his chest heaving, his jaw clenching so violently a muscle jumped near his temple. "What room is Mabel Vance in? We came to pick her up. Her administrative release forms are signed."

"Mrs. Vance is no longer on this floor," Evelyn replied, not glancing down at her chart.

Fiona pushed past her son, leaning over the counter, her voice shrill and trembling with panic. "What do you mean she isn't on this floor? Did you move her to intensive care? Did Dr. Harrison order a transfer?"

"No, Mrs. Vance," Evelyn said. "She was officially discharged forty-five minutes ago."

"Discharged?" Arthur bellowed, his voice echoing off the acoustic ceiling tiles, causing several patient doors down the hallway to crack open. "That's impossible! She has two spiral fractures! She can't walk! She has no legal guardian present to authorize a release! I am her father-in-law, and Flynn is her legal husband!"

Evelyn picked up a single sheet of paper from her desk, holding it up so Arthur could see the dark blue legal seal stamped across the bottom margin.

"Mrs. Vance presented a certified copy of an Emergency Revocation of Spousal Authority executed by the County Probate Court at ten-fifteen this morning," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet, razor-sharp satisfaction. "She also revoked all visitation permissions for Flynn Vance, Arthur Vance, and Fiona Vance."

Flynn stood frozen, staring at the nurse as if she were speaking an obscure dialect of ancient Greek. "Where... where did she go?"

"She left," Evelyn said simply.

"Left with who?" Flynn yelled, grabbing the edge of the desk, leaning so far over the wooden counter his tie dangled over the computer monitor. "She has no friends in this town! She has no family! She doesn't even have a driver's license that isn't connected to my address!"

Evelyn set the sheet of paper down, looking Flynn straight in his frantic, bloodshot eyes.

"She left in a private transport vehicle accompanied by two legal representatives from Croft, Sterling & Van Zandt," Evelyn said, her voice completely calm, completely flat.

Flynn’s breath caught in his throat. His hands slipped from the smooth laminate edge of the counter.

"Croft..." Flynn whispered, his voice suddenly losing all of its loud, booming authority, cracking into a thin, hollow squeak. "What did you say?"

"Croft, Sterling & Van Zandt," Evelyn repeated. "And before she left, Mrs. Vance specifically instructed me to pass along one single phrase to you, Mr. Vance, if you came looking for her."

The corridor fell completely silent.

Arthur stopped turning through his crumpled legal printouts. Fiona’s hands froze on her handbag. Flynn stared at the nurse, his mouth open, his skin turning the pale, greyish color of wet ash.

"What phrase?" Flynn whispered.

Evelyn leaned forward slightly across the desk, her eyes cold as winter rain.

"She said: 'The house was built in my name, Flynn, and the foundation just cracked.'"

Arthur Vance let out a sudden, strange, wet gasp—a sound like a balloon deflating through a tight tear in the rubber.

His hands opened. The crumpled legal printouts scattered across the linoleum floor like dry autumn leaves. His eyes rolled back into his head, exposing the red, bloodshot whites beneath his lids.

His knees buckled beneath his heavy frame. He went down sideways, his shoulder slamming hard against the side of the wooden reception counter, his body hitting the floor with a heavy, lifeless thud.

"Arthur!" Fiona shrieked, throwing herself down onto the linoleum beside her husband, her hands pulling wildly at his collar. "Arthur! Oh God! Someone help him! He isn't breathing!"

The hallway erupted into sudden, chaotic noise. Nurse Evelyn immediately hit the red emergency call button on the wall behind her, calling out calmly into her headset: "Code Blue, Fourth Floor, Nurses' Station. Code Blue."

Orderlies and ER technicians rushed down the corridor, pushing past Flynn with heavy rolling medical carts.

Flynn didn't move.

He stood frozen in the center of the chaotic hallway, staring blankly down at the scattered legal printouts lying around his father's unconscious body on the floor.

He reached down with a slow, trembling hand and picked up the top sheet.

It was a copy of an emergency asset freeze issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of South Carolina.
