Chapter 4 - The Shadow Brother

Hugo Hunter was thirty-two years old, built like a lightweight boxer, with a sharp, angular jaw and a cold, ruthless demeanor that made him far more dangerous than his hysterical older brother, Raphaël.

Where Raphaël was loud, impulsive, and sloppy, Hugo was quiet, calculating, and ruthless. He was the family’s structural mechanic—the one who hid the offshore shell accounts, bribed local inspectors, and ensured that the family’s illegal transactions were buried under seven layers of legitimate corporate filings.

On the security monitor, I watched Hugo march up the front marble steps. He didn't use a key. He raised the heavy steel crowbar and smashed it directly into the glass panel beside the deadbolt.

The glass shattered in a loud explosion of sound that echoed through the quiet house.

Hugo reached his gloved hand through the broken glass, turned the deadbolt from the inside, and kicked the heavy oak door wide open.

“Kelly!” Hugo’s voice boomed through the vacant foyer, echoing through the security monitor speakers. “Kelly, where the hell are you?!”

In the study, Paul’s hand tightened around my arm. His eyes were wide with terror.

“Hugo...” Paul rasped, his chest heaving violently against the safety harness of the transport chair. “He... was the one... who supplied... the paralytic drug... from his pharmaceutical contacts...”

My mind raced at ninety miles an hour.

Hugo wasn't supposed to be here. He was supposed to be on the charter flight to Zurich with Albert and Liliane.

I grabbed Kelly’s phone off the desk and opened her recent text messages.

A text message sent twenty minutes ago from Hugo read: “Albert forgot the original paper title to the warehouse in his desk safe. I’m taking a ground cab back to the house to retrieve it before the charter takes off from the regional runway. Have it ready.”

They hadn't taken off yet!

The charter flight had been delayed on the tarmac at the regional airport ten miles away due to the severe autumn thunderstorm. Hugo had driven back to the mansion to retrieve the original physical paper titles from Albert’s safe.

If Hugo found Kelly knocked out on the floor, he would sound the alarm immediately. He would call Albert at the runway, lock down the estate, and hunt us down before we could execute the counter-transfers.

I looked at the security monitor.

Hugo was walking rapidly down the hallway toward the living room, holding the crowbar tightly in his right hand.

“Nathalie...” Paul whispered, pulling my face down to his. “The safe... behind the painting... he’s coming to this room...”

I looked around Albert’s study.

The room had only one entrance—the heavy oak door we had locked from the inside. There were no windows, only floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, thick leather chairs, and heavy mahogany furniture.

If Hugo reached this door and found it locked, he would use the crowbar to break the lock in thirty seconds.

“We can’t hide,” I said, my voice dead quiet, my brain dropping into a state of absolute, hyper-focused composure. “So we fight him with his own system.”

I turned back to my laptop screen.

The LedgerShield software had fully decrypted the Vanguard Logistics corporate structure. Because Hugo was listed as the chief financial officer of Vanguard Logistics, his personal digital encryption signature was embedded directly into the central server framework.

I opened my administrative tool, copied Hugo’s master banking token ID from the decrypted files, and opened a remote terminal session directly into the internal security network of First Regional Bank of Ohio—the bank where Hugo held his personal multi-million-dollar liquidity accounts.

My fingers flew across the keyboard like a concert pianist playing a frantic, complex piece.

INITIATE REVERSE IDENTITY FRAUD PROTOCOL. TARGET: HUGO ALBERT HUNTER. ACCOUNT ID: #8841-9902-1104. ACTION: FLAG AS HIGH-RISK INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST FINANCING & MONEY LAUNDERING.

In the banking world, there is a specific legal mechanism known as a SAR-Freeze (Suspicious Activity Report Freeze). When a certified forensic accountant submits verified evidence of active money laundering connected to sanctioned offshore entities, the federal banking network automatically initiates an instantaneous, hard freeze across every linked line of credit, personal credit card, and corporate asset connected to that individual’s Social Security number.

I attached the decrypted files showing Raphaël’s contraband shipments and Hugo’s offshore wire transfers directly to the automated Treasury Department portal.

I hit SUBMIT.

A bright green notification flashed across my screen: TREASURY NOTICE FILED. TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF ALL LINKED ASSETS EXECUTED ACROSS 14 FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS.

At that exact second, on the security monitor, Hugo walked into the living room.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

He saw Kelly lying unconscious on the floor in a pool of water and shattered glass. He saw Paul’s empty hospital bed, the IV lines ripped away, the oxygen tank missing.

“What the hell?!” Hugo roared.

He pulled his smartphone from his pocket to call Albert.

Before he could dial, his phone screen flashed violently with six consecutive red notifications.

BANK ALERT: ALL ACCOUNTS FROZEN BY FEDERAL MANDATE. CREDIT CARD #4012 DECLINED. CREDIT CARD #8819 DECLINED. CORPORATE LINE OF CREDIT TERMINATED.

Hugo stared at his phone screen in total, uncomprehending shock. His face went from angry red to ghost white in three seconds.

His personal money, his corporate lines, his access to emergency funds—everything had vanished into thin air with a single click of my mouse.

Suddenly, Hugo’s eyes snapped up from his phone screen. He looked directly at the security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling.

He knew.

He knew that the only person in the world who possessed the technical skill and forensic knowledge to trigger an instantaneous federal banking freeze was sitting inside this house.

“Nathalie!” Hugo screamed, his voice turning into a high, bloodcurdling roar of rage that rattled through the security speakers. “Nathalie, you bitch! Where are you?!”

He turned on his heel and charged down the long hallway toward Albert’s study, clutching the steel crowbar tightly in his gloved fist.

He reached the heavy oak door.

He grabbed the brass handle and rattled it violently. It didn't budge.

“I know you’re in there!” Hugo screamed, pounding his heavy fist against the thick wood. “Open this door, or I swear to God I will kill both you and Paul before my plane leaves!”

Inside the study, Paul gripped the armrests of his transport chair, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

“Nathalie...” Paul whimpered. “He... he will break the door...”

I didn't answer. I stood behind Albert’s desk, holding a heavy brass desk lamp in my right hand, my eyes locked onto the oak door as the heavy wood began to splinter under the frantic, brutal blows of Hugo’s crowbar.

CRACK!

The top panel of the wood split open. A steel crowbar blade burst through the timber, spraying wood splinters across the carpet.

CRACK!

Hugo’s furious, bloodshot eye appeared through the cracked opening, staring straight at me.

“You’re dead, Nathalie!” Hugo spat, his teeth bared like a wild animal. “You think you’re smart because you can play with numbers?! You’re nothing! You’re just a cheap accountant who got lucky!”

He shoved his arm through the shattered wood panel, reaching around to grab the interior deadbolt.

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.

I walked calmly to the door, raised the heavy brass desk lamp, and slammed it down with all the force in my body directly onto Hugo’s exposed forearm.
