Chapter 5 - The Hospital Fortress

When Dante’s black SUV pulled up to the VIP entrance of New-York-Presbyterian Hospital at six o'clock that evening, the rain was pouring in dark sheets over Manhattan.
Dante leapt out of the vehicle, slamming the door, his expensive suit soaked within seconds. He marched toward the glass sliding doors, flanked by four of his top family enforcers—heavy, broad-shouldered men with concealed handguns under their leather jackets.
“Stay close,” Dante growled to his men. “We’re going to the 10th floor.”
They stepped into the lobby, but before they could reach the elevator bank, eight men in immaculate charcoal-gray suits stepped out from the side corridors, blocking their path.
These were not typical hospital security guards.
They moved with the synchronized, lethal grace of former elite military operators. Each man wore an earpiece and carried a visible tactical sidearm strapped to his chest.
The lead operator—a tall man with a scarred jaw and cold blue eyes—stepped forward, holding up a single hand.
“Dante Romano,” the man said, his voice flat and authoritative.
“Get out of my way,” Dante snarled, stepping into the man's space. “My wife and newborn son are upstairs. Move before my men put you through that glass wall.”
The four Romano enforcers behind Dante reached under their jackets.
Instantly, six laser dots—bright, lethal red—appeared on Dante’s chest and the foreheads of his four enforcers.
From the second-floor mezzanine overlooking the lobby, four additional tactical snipers held suppressed rifles pointed directly down at them.
The lobby fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
The lead operator didn't even flinch. He pulled a laminated document from his jacket and held it up.
“I am Director Vance, executive security chief for Vanguard Holdings,” the lead man stated calmly. “You are currently in violation of a restraining order issued by the United States District Court. If you or your men advance one inch further, you will be neutralized for attempting an armed kidnapping.”
Dante stared at the red laser dots dancing across his white dress shirt.
His enforcers froze, their faces turning slick with cold sweat. They were brutal street fighters, but they recognized military efficiency when they saw it.
“Dante…” one of his enforcers whispered nervously. “We can’t win this here. Look at the balcony.”
Dante’s chest heaved. His jaw clicked as he clenched his teeth so hard he tasted copper.
“I just want to see her!” Dante roared, his voice echoing off the high marble ceilings of the lobby. “Serena! I know you can hear me! Serena!”
From the elevator bank behind the tactical guards, the doors slid open with a soft chime.
Nora Greer stepped out.
She wore a sharp navy blazer, holding a thin leather briefcase. She walked toward the security line with absolute composure, stopping five feet from Dante.
“You’re making a scene, Dante,” Nora said quietly.
“Nora!” Dante panted, trying to step past Director Vance, but the scarred operator didn't budge an inch. “Where is she?! Let me see my son!”
Nora looked at him with an expression of profound, crushing pity—the kind of look one gives a child who has played with fire and burned down his own house.
“You don't have a son, Dante,” Nora said softly.
Dante felt as though he had been hit in the chest with a sledgehammer. “What… what did you say?”
“Legally speaking,” Nora explained, pulling a certified birth certificate from her briefcase, “the child’s name is Leo Vale. His father’s name on the registry is listed as Unknown pending formal paternity litigation, which Vanguard’s legal team will drag out in court for the next seven years.”
“He is my blood!” Dante screamed, his face contorting in rage. “I am a Romano!”
“And that is precisely why he will never bear your name,” Nora replied, her tone turning to absolute ice. “Serena freed him from your bloodline at four o'clock yesterday morning.”
Nora handed him a formal legal packet through the gap in the security guards.
“What is this?” Dante asked, his hands trembling as he took the papers.
“Your formal notice of corporate foreclosure,” Nora said. “As of thirty minutes ago, Vanguard Holdings has exercised its right of asset takeover. The Romano Group headquarters on Wall Street is currently being locked down by federal marshals. Your personal assets, accounts, and properties have been attached to secure the thirty million dollars in corporate funds you embezzled over the last eighteen months.”
Dante stared at the papers. The words swam before his eyes—Foreclosure… Asset Seizure… Federal Fraud Investigation.
“Where is Serena?” Dante whispered, his strength suddenly abandoning him. “Just let me speak to her. Please, Nora. Just five minutes.”
Nora looked at him for a long, quiet moment.
“She gave you three years, Dante,” Nora said gently. “She gave you fourteen phone calls while she was bleeding on your floor. You gave her five words: 'In a meeting. Call you later.'”

Nora turned around and walked back toward the elevator.
“She has nothing left to say to you.”
