Chapter 5 - The Price of a Crown

Matteo held the black diamond ring between his long fingers.

"Francesca took it off five seconds after you walked out of the dining room last night," Matteo said, his deep voice carrying a strange, heavy weight. "I took it from her myself."

Elena looked at the ring, then looked away. "It doesn't matter anymore, Matteo."

"It matters to me," he said, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of her. He didn't grab her. He didn't use force. He simply stood there, towering over her, his dark eyes searching her face with a desperate intensity.

"My father gave this ring to my mother when I was ten years old," Matteo said softly. "It was a contract. A political agreement between two families to secure power in Naples. There was no love in their marriage. They lived in the same house for thirty years like two strangers sharing a fortress."

He reached out, his thumb gently catching a tear as it slid down Elena’s cheek.

"When I bought this ring back from the vault six months ago," Matteo continued, his voice rough with emotion, "I swore I would never give it to a woman for politics. I swore I would only give it to a woman who made me feel like a human being instead of a monster."

"Then why did you let Francesca touch it?" Elena asked, her voice breaking.

"Because I am a fool," Matteo said plainly, without a shred of pride or hesitation. "Because I spent thirty-eight years learning that every problem in life is solved with leverage, threat, or political compromise. I thought as long as I kept you safe inside my walls, nothing else mattered."

He took her cold hand, lifting it between them.

"I didn't realize that by trying to keep you safe from my world, I was letting my world destroy you."

Elena looked up into his face. For fourteen months, she had known Matteo Bellini as the iron-willed Don—a man who never apologized, never showed weakness, and never let anyone see behind his impenetrable armor.

Now, standing in a dusty lace shop in the back alleys of Naples, he looked broken.

"I can't go back to Villa Bellini, Matteo," Elena whispered, pulling her hand gently from his grip. "I can't live in a house where your mother hates me, where your men watch my every step, and where my dignity is traded for dock permissions."

Matteo took a slow breath, his jaw tightening as he made a decision that would send shockwaves through the entire Italian underworld.

He turned toward the front door of the shop.

"Marco!" Matteo called out.

The door opened instantly, and Marco stepped inside, his weapon drawn.

"Boss?"

Matteo handed Marco the black diamond ring.

"Call Don Sergio Moretti," Matteo commanded, his voice cold, absolute, and echoing with terrifying authority. "Tell him the Bellini-Moretti alliance is nullified. Strip his family of all shipping rights in Genoa by midnight."

Marco gasped, his eyes wide with shock. "Boss... that will trigger a war with the Northern families! It will cost millions—"

"Do it now," Matteo interrupted, his dark eyes never leaving Elena’s face. "And tell my mother that if she speaks another disrespectful word to Elena Brooks, she will spend the rest of her life in our estate in Sicily, stripped of all access to the family accounts."

Marco swallowed hard, bowed his head, and backed out of the shop, closing the door behind him.

Elena stared at Matteo in absolute disbelief. "Matteo... what did you just do?"

"I chose my bride," Matteo said softly.
