Chapter 2 - The Deluge

The impact of the water was like a physical blow.

Margaret didn't even have time to scream. The warm, lavender-scented liquid hit her square in the nose and mouth, soaking her immaculate French twist in seconds. Lavender-infused water cascaded down her forehead, plastering silver strands of hair across her cheeks like wet seaweed. Her silk burgundy robe darkened instantly into a bruised purple where the water soaked through to her chest.

"Aaaagh!" Margaret gasped, staggering backward against the high-backed wing chair. The chair wobbled, its carved wooden legs scraping loudly across the white oak floor before coming to a halt against the radiator.

Vanessa shrieked, jumping back as if she had been splashed with acid. "Mom! Oh my god! Mom!"

Daniel stared, his mouth hanging open, his brain completely failing to process the sequence of physics and rebellion that had just unfolded before him. "Claire—what the hell did you just do?!"

Margaret sputtered, clawing wildly at her face with both hands, trying to wipe the water and lavender soap from her eyes. Her makeup ran in black streaks down her neck, turning her into a terrifying, drowned caricature of dignity.

"You—you wretched, ungrateful little bitch!" Margaret choked out, coughing as water dripped from her chin. "Daniel! Look at your wife! She’s insane! She’s completely out of her mind!"

Claire set the empty porcelain basin down on the mahogany dining table with a sharp clack that made the crystal wine glasses ring in protest. She wiped her hands casually on a linen napkin, her movements unhurried, as if she had just finished serving tea on a Tuesday afternoon.

"That," Claire said, her voice cutting cleanly through Margaret’s sputtering rage, "was symbol number one. Let's move on to symbol number two."

Daniel finally snapped out of his paralysis. He lunged forward, grabbing Claire by the forearm. His fingers were shaking, his face flushed with a mixture of horror and humiliation. "Have you lost your absolute mind? That is my mother! You just poured water on her! In our own house!"

"Our house?" Claire asked, tilting her head. She didn't pull her arm away; she simply looked down at his hand until Daniel’s grip involuntarily loosened under the freezing weight of her gaze. "Let’s clarify that right now, Daniel. Whose house is this?"

"It’s our house! We live here!" Daniel yelled, spraying spit in his panic. "My name is on the deed!"

"Your name is on the deed as an occupant granted joint survivorship rights under a conditional domestic partnership addendum," Claire recited smoothly, quoting paragraph four of the prenuptial agreement he had signed without reading in a Boston law office six years ago. "An addendum, Daniel, which explicitly states that if your immediate family attempts to encumber, mortgage, or otherwise leverage the property without my written, notarized authorization, your residency rights terminate immediately."

Vanessa stepped forward, her face twisted in fury. "What are you talking about with your stupid legal jargon? You're just a neurotic control freak! Mom, look at her! She thinks she runs everything because she sits in front of a laptop all day!"

Margaret finally managed to clear her eyes, wiping her face with the sleeve of her ruined silk robe. She pointed a trembling, diamond-encrusted finger at Claire, her chest heaving beneath the wet fabric.

"Get out," Margaret hissed, her voice trembling with venom. "Get out of this room right now. Daniel, throw her out. Call the police. Have her arrested for assault!"

Daniel looked between his mother—dripping, humiliated, and shrieking—and his wife, who stood before him with her hands folded neatly over her apron pockets, looking as calm as an executioner testing the edge of an axe.

"Claire," Daniel pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "Please. Just... just apologize. Help Mom clean up. We can pretend this didn't happen. We’ll talk about the loan application tomorrow. We can cancel it, whatever you want! Just stop acting like this!"

Claire felt a cold wave of pity wash over her—not for Daniel, but for herself, for the six years she had spent trying to build a partnership with a man whose spine was made of wet cardboard.

"There is no loan application to cancel tomorrow, Daniel," Claire said quietly. "Because tomorrow you won't be living here."

Vanessa laughed hysterically. "Oh, listen to her! She’s kicking us out! Mom, did you hear that? The little office worker is evicting us from Daniel’s house!"

"Not you, Vanessa," Claire said, turning her dark eyes toward her sister-in-law. "All of you."

Claire reached into her cardigan pocket, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen twice.

BEEP.

A heavy, synchronized chime echoed through the smart-home speakers installed in every room of the house.

“Security protocol active,” the automated voice of the house system announced serenely. “All exterior smart locks engaged. Master override enabled. Guest access revoked.”

From the front hallway came the heavy, mechanical clack-clack of the deadbolts throwing themselves into place, followed by a soft, electronic chime indicating that the security system had transitioned from 'Home' to 'Lockdown' mode.

Daniel stared at the wall. "What... what did you do?"

"I revoked your family's guest privileges," Claire said, walking past him toward the hallway. "And yours."
