Chapter 4 - The Dragnet

The commercial boulevard at 8:30 PM was lit by the bright, neon glow of fast-food signs, gas station canopies, and strip-mall parking lots.

Tyler drove with his left arm resting casually out the shattered driver's window, the cold autumn wind blowing his messy hair across his forehead. He was playing music through his phone's speaker, tapping his thumb against the leather steering wheel, feeling like a king who had finally secured his crown.

He pulled into the parking lot of a corner convenience store, intending to buy another pack of cigarettes and an energy drink.

As he swung the sedan into a parking space directly in front of the store's glass storefront, the night sky was suddenly shattered by a blinding, chaotic wash of red and blue light.

WOOP-WOOP.

Two heavy police SUVs pulled directly behind his sedan, angling their front bumpers to completely block his rear escape route. Simultaneously, a third marked cruiser swung around the right side, blocking his passenger door, while a fourth vehicle sealed off the driveway exit to the main road.

High-intensity white searchlights—takedown spotlights—erupted from the roofs of the police cruisers, blinding Tyler instantly. The light was so bright it turned the interior of the silver sedan into a stark, shadowless white box.

"DRIVER! PUT YOUR HANDS OUT THE WINDOW! DO IT NOW!"

The voice bounced through a high-powered bullhorn, booming across the concrete lot with terrifying, mechanical force.

Tyler froze. His heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. His arrogant grin dissolved into pure, unadulterated terror.

"What the... what is this?" Tyler stammered, pulling his hands back from the steering wheel.

"KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM! DRIVER, REACH OUT THE WINDOW AND OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE! IF YOU REACH DOWN FOR ANY REASON, WE WILL USE FORCE!"

Through the glare of the spotlights, Tyler could see the dark silhouettes of four police officers standing behind their open vehicle doors. Every single one of them had their service weapons drawn and pointed directly at his chest.

"I... I didn't do anything!" Tyler screamed out the shattered window, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical screech. "This is my sister's car! I have permission!"

"GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE SLOWLY! FACE AWAY FROM US! DOWN ON YOUR KNEES!"

Tyler’s hands were shaking so violently he could barely find the exterior door handle. He opened the door, stepped out onto the cold asphalt, and immediately stumbled as his knees gave out beneath him.

"ON YOUR STOMACH! HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK!"

Two officers moved in with lightning speed. Before Tyler could utter another word, a heavy, tactical boot pressed firmly into the center of his upper back, pinning him to the oil-stained concrete. His arms were pulled roughly behind his spine, and the ice-cold steel jaws of a pair of handcuffs snapped around his wrists with two sharp, definitive clicks.

CLICK-CLICK.

"Ow! Hey! You're hurting my arms!" Tyler shrieked, tears of terror bursting from his eyes as he pressed his cheek against the rough pavement. "Call my dad! Call Richard Vance! This is a mistake!"

The arresting officer, a tall sergeant named Miller, pulled Tyler up by his elbows, slamming him face-first against the side of the police cruiser.

Sergeant Miller shined his tactical flashlight into Tyler's face, then directed the beam over the ruined silver sedan—the smashed windshield, the destroyed mirror, the shattered side window, and the tire iron resting explicitly on the back floorboard.

"You're Tyler Vance?" Sergeant Miller asked, his voice cold and devoid of sympathy.

"Yes! Yes, I'm Tyler! My sister Nora gave me the keys! Ask her!"

Sergeant Miller pulled a small digital terminal from his vest pocket, reviewing a live warrant brief that had been filed twenty-two minutes ago by the District Attorney's office via Attorney Marcus Kavanagh.

"Nora Vance filed a formal criminal complaint thirty minutes ago," Sergeant Miller said calmly. "She provided high-definition audio recordings of you destroying this vehicle with a tire iron while making explicit extortion demands. We also have full video footage of the entire incident provided by a neighbor's security system across the street."

Tyler's breath caught in his throat. His face went entirely white, all the blood draining from his features until he looked like a corpse.

"Audio... video?" Tyler stammered, his lips trembling violently. "She... she was crying on the steps..."

"She wasn't crying, son," Sergeant Miller muttered, pulling a small Miranda warning card from his pocket as he shoved Tyler into the rear plastic seat of the police cruiser. "She was collecting evidence."

Sergeant Miller read him his rights in a flat, monotone voice while Tyler wept hysterically in the back of the car, his forehead pressed against the iron mesh partition dividing the front and back seats.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As the cruiser pulled out of the parking lot with its lights flashing, Sergeant Miller picked up his radio microphone.

"Dispatch, this is Unit 4. We have the primary suspect, Tyler Vance, in custody for felony grand larceny and second-degree criminal mischief. We are proceeding to 112 Elm Street to serve secondary arrest warrants for co-conspirators Richard and Brenda Vance."

"Copy that, Unit 4," the dispatcher's voice crackled back through the speaker. "Units 2 and 3 are already staged outside the Elm Street residence. Execute upon arrival."
