Chapter 5 - The Fall of Blackwood Holdings

Forty-eight hours later, the financial world witnessed the complete collapse of the Blackwood dynasty.

The State Attorney General filed formal indictment charges against Evelyn Blackwood for first-degree murder, conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate fraud. The state prosecutor froze all domestic and international accounts tied to Blackwood Holdings, placing the entire corporate structure into emergency receivership.

I sat in the mahogany boardroom on the top floor of the Blackwood Tower on Wall Street.

The executive chairs were empty. The board members who had spent years dismissing me as Adrian’s decorative wife had all resigned or fled the country to avoid federal subpoenas.

At the head of the table sat the court-appointed trustee, alongside Arthur Vance and myself.

The double doors opened, and Celeste Vaughn walked in.

She was no longer wearing her designer clothes or diamond jewelry. She wore a simple dark coat over her maternity dress, her face drawn, her eyes bloodshot. She looked exhausted, terrified, and utterly alone.

She stood at the opposite end of the mahogany table, clutching her leather purse to her stomach.

“Clara,” Celeste said, her voice shaking slightly. “I... I asked the receiver for five minutes with you.”

“Sit down, Celeste,” I said calmly, gesturing to a chair.

Celeste didn't sit. She took a step closer, her knuckles white against her bag. “The state marshals came to my apartment yesterday. They served me with a freeze order on the emerald necklace, the car Adrian bought me, and the trust fund he set up for the baby. They said... they said all of it was bought with money stolen from your mother’s trust.”

“It was,” I replied flatly. “Every dollar Adrian spent on you, on your apartment, and on that necklace came directly from the Newark land dividends.”

Tears welled up in Celeste’s eyes. “I didn't know about the murder, Clara! I swear to you! I just thought Adrian was a wealthy man getting out of a bad marriage! He told me you were cold, that you didn't love him, that you were just staying for his money!”

I looked at her with a mixture of pity and resolve.

“Adrian told you whatever he needed to tell you to feel like a man,” I said softly. “And you believed him because you wanted the lifestyle that came with his name. You sat at that auction three days ago, held up that paddle, and kissed my husband in front of three hundred people because you wanted to show the world that you had won.”

Celeste covered her face with her hands, letting out a ragged sob. “They’re taking my home, Clara. I have nowhere to go. My father disowned me when the indictment hit the news. The baby is due in six weeks.”

I stood up slowly from my executive chair and walked around the long table until I stood a few feet from her.

“I won't leave a child homeless, Celeste,” I said clearly. “I know what it’s like to be an innocent child whose life is destroyed by the arrogance of the Blackwood family.”

Celeste pulled her hands down, looking at me with shock. “You... you won't block the medical trust?”

“I will authorize a private stipend from the Vale Estate to cover your housing and your daughter’s medical care,” I said. “On two conditions.”

Celeste nodded frantically. “Anything. Name it.”

“First, you surrender every piece of jewelry, art, and property Adrian gave you to the court trustee to pay back the company’s low-level employees whose pensions were stolen,” I instructed. “Second... when your daughter is born, you never let her near Adrian or Evelyn Blackwood for as long as she lives.”

Celeste wiped her eyes, her voice barely a whisper. “Thank you... thank you, Clara.”

“Don't thank me,” I said, turning back toward the window overlooking Manhattan. “Thank my mother.”
