Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

Grant stepped forward, his face red with confusion and sudden, sharp irritation.

"Wait a minute," Grant demanded, pushing his way between the tables. "What the hell is going on here? Ethan, why are you calling my wife 'Counselor'? Mariana is a receptionist."

Ethan slowly turned around to face Grant. A look of profound, devastating contempt crossed his face.

"Mariana Vance is not a receptionist, Mr. Carden," Ethan said, his voice echoing off the brick walls like a judge’s gavel. "Mariana Vance is a graduate of Harvard Law School, former senior litigation associate at Vance & Sterling, and one of the finest forensic legal minds in the United States."

A collective gasp went through the room.

Darlene’s glass of champagne wobbled in her hand. "What? That’s... that’s impossible! She’s... she cooks our meals!"

Grant stared at Mariana, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated shock. "Mariana... what is he talking about?"

Mariana stood up slowly. She smoothed the silk of her emerald dress, pulled a small leather folder from her clutch purse, and laid it flat on the white linen tablecloth.

"He’s talking about the fact that I let you believe I was weak, Grant," Mariana said, her voice dropping into that razor-sharp, lethal register that had once terrified corporate executives in federal courtrooms. "I let you believe I was a depressed, broken woman because I was grieving my father. And while I was grieving, you and your mistress decided to steal four point two million dollars from your family’s business and frame me for the crime."

Brielle’s face instantly drained of all color. She took a sharp step back toward the exit. "Ethan... she’s crazy! She’s lying! I don't know what she’s talking about!"

"Sit down, Miss Voss," one of the men who had entered with Ethan said, stepping smoothly to block the double doors. He pulled a silver badge from his coat pocket. "Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. No one leaves this room."

Darlene let out a sharp, terrified shriek. "IRS? Grant! What is happening?"

Grant’s hands began to shake violently. "Mariana, please—this is a misunderstanding! We can talk about this at home—"

"We aren't going home, Grant," Mariana said softly.

She opened the leather folder on the table.

"Over the last three weeks, with the full cooperation of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas and the IRS Criminal Division, an independent forensic audit was completed on Carden Logistics," Mariana announced, looking directly at Grant’s sisters and Darlene.

"On March fourteen, a shell company named Voss Management LLC was created in Delaware using my stolen Social Security number and forged signature," Mariana continued, pulling out a crisp white document. "Over fourteen months, Grant Carden authorized forty-two separate wire transfers from Carden Logistics’ primary operational reserve into this account. The money was then routed to Nevis International Bank, where Room 614 at the airport hotel was booked twenty-six times using stolen company funds."

Grant fell back against a chair, his face white as paper, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

"Furthermore," Ethan interjected, stepping beside Mariana, "Miss Voss attempted to use my law firm’s client trust accounts to deposit two million dollars of the stolen proceeds under the guise of a pre-marital asset transfer. What Miss Voss failed to realize is that I have been working directly with Mariana Vance for six weeks to trace every single digital footprint she left behind."

Brielle dropped her designer handbag onto the floor. Her hands went to her head, her manicured fingers twisting into her sleek blonde hair. "Grant... you told me she didn't know anything! You told me she was an idiot!"

"Shut up! Shut up, Brielle!" Grant screamed, his voice cracking into a panicked, high-pitched pitch. He turned to Mariana, dropping to his knees right beside the dining table, his hands reaching out to grab the hem of her emerald dress.

"Mariana! Please!" Grant sobbed, tears spilling over his cheeks, his handsome face ruined by pure terror. "I was stupid! She manipulated me! Brielle seduced me and made me do it! I love you, Mariana! You’re my wife! Don't do this to me! Think of my father! Think of Dad!"

Mariana looked down at her husband kneeling in the dirt at her feet.

She remembered the wrinkled shirt thrown onto the counter. She remembered Darlene calling her a cheap maid while Grant laughed with his wine glass raised. She remembered sitting alone in the kitchen scrubbing pots until midnight while he lay in Room 614.

She pulled the fabric of her dress cleanly out of his trembling hands.

"I am thinking of your father, Grant," Mariana said softly. "Which is why three days ago, I secured a court-appointed legal guardianship over Harold Carden. His care, his medical decisions, and his personal assets have been legally transferred to a private trust managed entirely by me. He will never be neglected by you or your mother again."

Darlene let out a strangled groan and collapsed sideways onto her daughter’s shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.

Mariana turned to the federal agents standing at the door.

"He’s all yours, officers."
