Chapter 6 - WHAT SHE DID SIX YEARS AGO

We spent the night talking.

Not as husband and wife.

As two people trying to reconstruct a life that might have been built on lies.

Daniel told me everything he remembered.

Before our wedding, Margaret had insisted I was unstable.

She told him I'd been secretly seeing another man.

She said I'd become pregnant and lost the baby.

She said I was ashamed.

None of it was true.

"Why didn't you ask me?" I whispered.

"I did."

"When?"

"The week before our wedding."

"I told you I had never been pregnant."

"I know."

"Then why did you believe her?"

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was stupid."

"No."

"Yes."

He looked at me.

"I was afraid of losing my mother."

That sentence broke something in me.

Not because he was cruel.

Because it was honest.

He had spent his entire life trying to earn Margaret's approval.

She knew it.

She used it.

The next morning, Rachel filed an emergency request to freeze the remaining joint funds.

Then we contacted federal financial investigators.

Margaret responded within hours.

She hired an attorney.

Then she sent me a letter.

The letter accused me of financial abuse.

It claimed I had manipulated Daniel.

It alleged that I was trying to steal the Whitmore family estate.

Rachel read it and laughed.

"She's scared."

"How can you tell?"

"People who have evidence don't write emotional letters."

Then came the lawsuit.

Margaret sued me.

She claimed the $227,000 was part of a "family financial arrangement."

She demanded that I return the money.

I looked at Rachel.

"She wants me to return the money she took from me."

"Exactly."

The hearing was scheduled for Monday.

On Sunday night, Caroline came to our house.

She looked exhausted.

"I have something else."

She handed me a flash drive.

"What is it?"

"Mom's old security footage."

I looked at her.

"How did you get this?"

"I took it."

"Caroline—"

"I know."

She sat down.

"Mom has cameras everywhere."

We opened the files.

Most were ordinary.

Then we found one dated the night of the first $40,000 transfer.

Margaret entered Daniel's office.

She opened his computer.

She accessed our bank account.

Then she called someone.

Edward Kane.

We heard her say:

"Do it tonight."

The video continued.

Then Margaret said something else.

Something that made all three of us go silent.

"If Daniel ever finds out, I'll make sure Ava takes the blame."

Caroline covered her mouth.

I stared at the screen.

There it was.

The proof.

But Rachel shook her head.

"We need more."

"More?"

"Enough to establish intent."

We kept watching.

Another video.

Margaret meeting Edward.

Another.

Margaret discussing the trust.

Another.

Margaret threatening Caroline.

And then we found something terrifying.

A recording of Margaret speaking to a doctor.

She asked whether a person could be declared mentally incompetent based on "chronic emotional instability."

Rachel leaned closer.

"She was planning something."

"For Daniel?"

"Yes."

The next file was labeled with a date three months in the future.

It shouldn't have existed.

I opened it.

The video showed Margaret sitting at a desk.

She was speaking directly to the camera.

"If you're watching this," she said, "then something has gone wrong."

She paused.

Then she smiled.

"I know exactly who will betray me."

She turned.

And said one name.

"Caroline."

Caroline began crying.

Margaret continued.

"She thinks she knows the truth."

Then she looked directly into the camera.

"But she doesn't know what happened to her father."

The video ended.

Caroline stared at me.

"What happened to Dad?"

Neither of us knew.

Until the next morning, Thomas Reed called.

May you like

His voice was grim.

"Richard Whitmore didn't die naturally."
