Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

Within fifteen minutes, the parking garage was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of three San Diego Police Department patrol vehicles.
Nora stood near the garage entrance, wrapped in a warm coat provided by a friendly officer, while two crime scene technicians dusted the shattered Mercedes and the discarded fire extinguisher for fingerprints.
Officer Ramirez, a senior investigator with a stern face, was taking Nora’s official statement.
“Ma’am, you’re saying your mother-in-law did this intentionally after an argument in your apartment?” Ramirez asked, pencil hovering over his notepad.
“Yes, Officer,” Nora replied calmly. “Her name is Florence Vance.”
Just then, the garage elevator doors slid open. Liam stepped out, looking anxious. He had come down to look for Nora after hearing the sirens echoing up the building’s air shafts.
When his eyes registered the catastrophic scene—Nora’s luxury SUV smashed to pieces, glass littering the floor, police officers everywhere—his face went completely white.
“Nora! What happened?!” Liam gasped, running over. “Did someone break in?! Was there a robbery?!”
Officer Ramirez turned to Liam. “Sir, are you Liam Vance?”
“Yes! Yes, I’m her husband!” Liam stammered, looking terrified.
“Your wife claims your mother, Florence Vance, committed this act of felony vandalism,” Ramirez stated firmly.
Liam’s eyes went wide. His immediate, ingrained reaction was to protect his mother. Without hesitation, he stepped between Nora and the police officer, shaking his head frantically.
“No! No, that’s impossible!” Liam lied loudly, his voice shaking. “My mother left the building over thirty minutes ago! She took an Uber straight to the airport! She was nowhere near this garage! Nora is just angry because we had a family argument earlier! She’s trying to frame my mother!”
Nora watched her husband tell a blatant, criminal lie to a police officer to protect his toxic mother and frame his own wife. A deep, cold sense of finality washed over her soul. Any tiny remaining ember of love or hope she had held for Liam instantly turned to cold ash.
Officer Ramirez frowned, looking between Liam and Nora. “Sir, making a false police statement is a severe crime—”
“I’m not lying!” Liam insisted desperately, sweating profusely. “My mother is an innocent, elderly woman! She suffers from severe arthritis! She couldn't even lift a heavy fire extinguisher if she tried! Nora made this up to destroy my family!”
At that exact moment, the heavy garage doors opened, and a sleek black Lincoln Town Car pulled in. Arthur Pendelton stepped out, wearing an immaculate charcoal suit and carrying a thick leather briefcase.
“Officer Ramirez,” Arthur declared loudly, stepping into the light and shaking the officer’s hand. “I am Arthur Pendelton, lead counsel for Mrs. Nora Vance.”
“Mr. Pendelton,” Ramirez acknowledged. “We have a conflicting statement here. The husband claims the mother was not present.”
Arthur let out a quiet, cold laugh. He turned to Nora. “Nora, please provide the file.”
Nora calmly pulled out her phone, opened the video file, and handed it directly to Officer Ramirez.
“This video was recorded twenty minutes ago,” Arthur explained smoothly to the officers. “It contains full audio and visual tracking of Florence Vance actively smashing the vehicle, along with a clear recorded statement where she explicitly confesses to the act, admits her intent to frame my client, and threatens her.”
Officer Ramirez hit play on the screen.
The garage fell completely silent except for the crisp, high-definition audio blasting from the phone’s speakers:
CRACK! BANG!
On the screen, Florence’s face was crystal clear in the bright garage light, her eyes manic as she smashed the iron extinguisher into the Mercedes hood. Then came the terrifyingly clear audio of her stepping right up to the camera:
“Oops… Looks like someone had a little accident… Who do you think the police are going to believe? My son will lie for me until the day he dies. Let’s see who’s going to believe you.”
Liam stood completely frozen, staring at the screen in absolute horror. The blood drained from his face until he looked like a living corpse. His lips trembled, but no sound came out. He had just lied to the police on official record, and his mother’s own manic voice on video had utterly destroyed his lie in front of four officers.
Officer Ramirez turned his glare to Liam, his hands moving to the handcuffs on his belt.
“Mr. Vance,” Ramirez said in a terrifyingly dark tone. “You just provided a fraudulent official statement to federal-level law enforcement investigators during an active felony crime scene investigation.”
“I… I… I didn't know…” Liam choked out, stumbling backward. “She told me… she told me she didn't do it!”
“Save it for your deposition, Mr. Vance,” Arthur Pendelton interrupted sharply, pulling a thick blue folder out of his briefcase. “Because we are just getting started.”
Arthur stepped between Liam and Nora, opening the legal folder.
“Liam Vance,” Arthur said, his voice echoing through the cold concrete garage like a judge pronouncing a sentence. “Six months ago, in consideration of my client paying off your personal two-hundred-thousand-dollar commercial debts, you voluntarily executed a legally binding, irrevocable Post-Nuptial Marital Agreement and Property Trust Act.”
Liam blinked, his mind struggling to process the legal words through his sheer panic. “What… what does that have to do with this?”
“Section 12, Paragraph B of that signed agreement,” Arthur read aloud, pointing a clean pen at the signature page bearing Liam’s own handwritten signature, “states explicitly that if you or any member of your immediate biological family commits an intentional tort, fraudulent financial extraction, or criminal act resulting in material harm to Nora Vance or her separate estate, you automatically forfeit all marital support rights, all claims to shared asset divisions, and agree to immediate, uncompensated vacation of the marital residence within four hours of notification.”
Arthur closed the folder with a sharp, heavy snap.

“In short, Liam: Your mother’s little stunt didn't just smash a car. It officially stripped you of every single legal right you had to Nora’s estate, her home, her money, and her life. You are broke, you are legally evicted as of this moment, and you are about to be named as an co-conspirator in a major felony indictment.”
Liam collapsed onto his knees right there on the oil-stained concrete floor, burying his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably as the true scale of his utter ruin crashed down upon him.
