Chapter 5 - THE DEAD MAN'S VOICE

I sat frozen in the cold stainless-steel vault, the paper trembling violently in my grip.

Thallium. An odorless, tasteless heavy metal historically used in rat poison. It causes hair loss, severe stomach pain, neurological breakdown, and eventually cardiac failure—the exact symptoms David had exhibited during his terrifying six-week decline in the hospital.

"Aunt Harper?" Bailey’s soft voice broke through the suffocating silence. She was looking at the paper in my hand. "Is that about Daddy?"

I quickly folded the document and slipped it back into the envelope, forcing a gentle smile onto my face.

"Yes, sweetie," I said softly. "It's going to help us fix everything."

I took the sleek metal flash drive, plugged it into my laptop, which I had brought in my tote bag, and opened the root directory.

A single video file appeared on the screen, labeled: DAVID_MILLER_FINAL_STATEMENT.mp4.

I clicked play.

The screen flickered to life. David appeared on the monitor, sitting in his dim study on Oak Ridge. He looked horribly pale, thin, and frail, his hair thinning, his hands trembling as he rested them on the oak desk.

"If you are watching this video," David’s voice rasped through the laptop speakers, sounding weak yet terribly clear, "it means I am dead, and Jean has successfully carried out her plan."

I covered my mouth with my hand, tears stinging my eyes.

"Three weeks ago," David continued, staring directly into the camera lens, "I began experiencing severe numbness in my legs and violent abdominal pain. I took a hair sample and sent it privately to a forensic toxicology lab in Hartford. The results confirmed my worst fears. I am being poisoned with small, daily doses of thallium slipped into my morning tea."

David swallowed hard, pausing to catch his breath.

"Jean discovered I was tracking her offshore transfers. She knows I have the full ledger of her laundering operations. I locked my original notes in safe deposit box four-twelve at First National. I gave the duplicate key to my daughter, Bailey. Jean believes she can inherit my estate, secure my assets, and walk away clean. But if this drive is in the hands of the authorities, the evidence inside this folder contains every bank record, every poisoned tea sample report, and every wire transaction necessary to send her to prison for the rest of her life."

David leaned closer to the camera, his eyes filled with profound, heartbreaking sorrow.

"Harper... if you are the one watching this, please protect my little girl. She is the only innocent person left in this nightmare. Don't let Jean take her."

The video cut to black.

I sat in absolute silence, the hum of the vault's air conditioning the only sound in the room.

My own sister had murdered her husband in cold blood. She had terrorized his daughter to keep her quiet, burned her own home to destroy the paper trail, and was now preparing to flee to France with millions in stolen offshore funds.

I looked down at the flash drive in my hand.

"She isn't getting away with this," I whispered, my voice dripping with cold, unyielding resolve.

I pulled out my cell phone, navigated to my contacts, and dialed the direct line for Detective Marcus Vance—my cousin on my father's side, who worked in the Major Crimes Division of the New York State Police.

"Marcus," I said the second he answered. "I need you to bring a forensic team to the First National Bank in Westchester right now. I have the evidence that proves David Miller was murdered."
