Chapter 5 - The Video Revealed

For three agonizing seconds, the giant LED screen remained a dark, glossy square above the head table. The silence inside the Grand Ballroom was so dense you could hear the soft hum of the air filtration system and the distant rustle of silk dresses as guests leaned forward in their chairs.
Then, the audio kicked in.
A sharp static pop echoed through the ceiling speakers, followed by the familiar, low hum of my apartment kitchen refrigerator.
The screen illuminated.
High-definition footage—recorded clearly from the top of my kitchen microwave—filled the six-foot display. The timestamp in the lower left corner read: OCTOBER 24 - 20:14:02.
The three hundred guests in the ballroom gasped in unison as my small, cramped kitchen appeared on the screen. The worn laminate counters, the child’s drawings taped to the refrigerator, and the pile of ungraded essays were visible in sharp detail.
On the screen, I was seen walking out of the frame toward my bedroom.
A second later, the front door of my apartment swung open.
Vanessa stepped into the kitchen frame. She was wearing her camel-hair coat, her golden hair damp from the rain. She looked around the apartment with a look of visible disgust before turning back toward the doorway.
Then, Daniel walked into the frame.
A violent, sharp wave of muttering erupted across the front tables.
"Is that... is that Daniel?" a voice called out from the third row—one of my mother’s high-society friends. "Claire's ex-husband?"
On the giant display, Daniel reached out, catching Vanessa around the waist, pulling her back against his chest.
The camera caught everything. The way Vanessa leaned into his touch. The way she turned her face up toward his. The way her hand—bearing Graham Vance’s three-carat flawless diamond engagement ring—rested against Daniel’s chest as they kissed passionately on the screen.
In the ballroom, phones came out almost instantly. Dozens of guests—socialites, reporters from local lifestyle magazines, and political donors—raised their smartphones, recording the giant LED screen as the video played out in excruciating, undeniable clarity.
"Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" Vanessa screeched, her voice tearing through the room as she tried to break free from Marcus's grip. "It's fake! It's a deepfake! She used AI to make it! Graham, look at me! It's AI!"
Graham didn't look at her. He stood perfectly still five feet from the DJ platform, his hands resting in his tuxedo pockets, his eyes locked onto the giant screen above him.
On the video, Daniel’s voice filled the ballroom speakers, crisp and loud:
"How long do we have to keep playing this game, Van? I'm tired of waiting in hotel rooms in Boston while you pretend to be the dutiful bride to a shipping heir."
Vanessa’s recorded response bounced off the crystal chandeliers:
"Just until Saturday. Once the ceremony is over and Graham signs the trust integration documents, the offshore accounts unlock. Graham’s father set up a fifty-million-dollar marital fund that activates the second the marriage certificate is filed with the state."
A loud, thunderous roar of outrage erupted from the front tables—specifically from the table where Graham’s father, Richard Vance, sat surrounded by his legal counsel and corporate board members.
Richard Vance—a broad-chested, white-haired patriarch worth two billion dollars—stood up slowly from his seat. His face was dark with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked at his son.
On the stage, Graham didn't say a word.
Slowly, deliberately, he reached down with his right hand. His fingers caught the thick, heavy band of platinum resting on his left ring finger—the wedding ring Vanessa had placed on his finger less than forty minutes prior during the ceremony.
He pulled the ring off his finger.
He didn't throw it. He didn't shout. He simply held the metal ring between his thumb and forefinger for a second, then let it drop.
CLINK.
The heavy platinum band hit the polished hardwood floor, bouncing once before rolling quietly beneath the edge of the DJ booth.
"Graham, please!" Vanessa sobbed, dropping to her knees on the stage, her eighty-thousand-dollar beaded gown pooling around her like crumpled paper. "I love you! It was a mistake! He forced me! Daniel forced me!"
On the screen, Daniel’s recorded voice cut through her frantic screaming:
"And Graham doesn't suspect anything?"
Vanessa’s recorded voice replied instantly with brutal, chilling clarity:
"Graham thinks I'm an angel. He thinks I'm a sweet, innocent schoolteacher's sister who loves charity work... He has no idea about the shell company in the Caymans."
My mother, Patricia, collapsed back into her chair at Table Twelve, her hand clutching her chest, her face pale as a bedsheet as her high-society peers turned to stare at her with expressions of utter disgust and mockery.
I thought the revelation was over. I thought the worst secret had been laid bare in front of the three hundred guests.

I was wrong.
On the screen, the video kept playing.
